HANOVER, N.H. – Women's hockey wrapped up their 2024 home games Saturday, dropping an overtime battle with Minnesota State Mankato.
The Big Green and Mavericks traded goals early, finishing the first period tied at one. Just over five minutes into the period, Mankato got on the board, capitalizing on a power play.
With only seconds to spare in the period,
Mia Buonarosa threw a shot on net, with a rebound that trickled through the Mavericks' goaltender.
Cally Dixon crashed the net, making sure the rebound found its way in to tie the game at one.
Mankato scored the lone goal of the second period, capitalizing on another power play opportunity to take a 2-1 lead.
While the Big Green were outshot 24-7 in the third period, they only needed one to go in. With just over six minute to play,
Izee Powell ripped a shot from the point, taking the one shot the Big Green needed to go in to tie the game.
With just under a minute and a half to play in the period, Minnesota State Mankato drew two penalties, putting the Big Green down two players with the game tied.
Dartmouth stood strong, making saves and blocking shots to send the game to overtime. Michaela Hesová, who made 49 saves in net, made two sprawling saves as the five-on-three advantage expired in overtime to keep the game tied at two.
Shortly thereafter, Dartmouth found themselves down again, and this time, the Mavericks would score their third power play goal of the day, earning the 3-2 victory.
"A very gutsy performance from our group, especially with some power play goals going in earlier in the game," Head Coach
Maura Crowell said about her team's performance. "I thought our bench was really into it. Great energy from everybody that was on the ice and off the ice, pushing [Mankato]… I loved our effort. I thought that was a fantastic bounce back game for us from last night. We cleaned up a lot of areas that we had talked about after looking at the film and I'm happy with the way we played today."
In net, Hesová made 49 saves of the 52 shots she faced, a season high.
"I'm just glad I could help the girls out because the past couple of games, I haven't really been able to help them as much as I would want to," Hesová said about her performance. I'm glad we made it all the way to [overtime]. It's a tough loss, and other than that, I think the girls played great. We got a ton of blocks; they were very incredible on defense."
Dartmouth is on the road next weekend, travelling to Clarkson and St. Lawrence for another pair of ECAC Hockey matchups.
The goal for Crowell's team headed into the weekend, "Play more like we did today, clean up a little bit, and be ready to get back into the action."
Friday's matchup with the Golden Knights is set for 6 p.m. while Saturday's matchup with the Saints is slated for 3 p.m. You can watch both games on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
