POTSDAM, N.Y. – Trailing 3-1 in the second period, the Big Green scored a goal in both the second and third period to tie the game, but an even strength goal just as a Clarkson power play expired and an empty net goal secured a 5-3 victory for the Golden Knights.
Dartmouth was able to get on the board first, scoring just over four minutes into the game.
Laura Fuoco, playing in her 100
th career game with the Big Green, dumped the puck into the offensive zone off the back of a Clarkson defender. The puck found its way to
Lauren Messier who quickly shot the puck, beating the Golden Knights goaltender to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
Within the next two and a half minutes, Clarkson scored two goals to take a 2-1 lead. Despite an action packed first seven minutes, neither team scored again for the remainder of the first period.
Early into the second period, Clarkson capitalized on a power play goal, extending their lead to two. Towards the end of the period, Fuoco carried the puck into the offensive zone and despite being defended, sent the puck to
Meredith Jensen at the blue line. Jensen took a shot through traffic that found its way to the back of the net, bringing the Big Green within one headed into the final period of regulation.
It took only four minutes and nine seconds of time in the third period for Dartmouth to tie the game. Fuoco found herself at the right place at the right time, burying a loose puck in the crease on the power play to pull the Big Green even.
Shortly after, Dartmouth went on the penalty kill and despite successfully killing the penalty, allowed a goal only mere seconds later, as Clarkson would retake the lead.
With just under two minutes remaining, the Big Green went on the power play. While they generated a few chances up two players and with an empty net, the Golden Knights were able to find the empty net, securing a 5-3 victory over the Big Green.
Despite the Big Green not coming away with the victory, they were never out of it and continued to battle.
"I loved our fight, you know especially coming back. We've been doing that a few times now, scoring late in games which is really encouraging," Crowell said. "I think our group is ready to play. Very engaged, very excited when we were finding the back of the net. So the belief was really high. I think you know now that we have the fight, we have the compete, we're playing with the best teams in the country. Now we got to be able to finish out the ends of games when we have the chance."
While finishing games and staying out of the penalty box Is Crowell's biggest takeaway from Clarkson, Fuoco said the week of preparation is what helped them on the ice Friday.
"As a team, we were implementing the things that we worked on all week long and I think we stayed confident and stayed to our identity," Fuoco said postgame about what was clicking for her and the Big Green.
"It looked like she had played 100 games," Crowell said about her assistant captain. "She brings such a different element to the ice. She slows the game down. She is extremely heady, understands the game well, and puts herself in a really good spot to finish or create for other people."
Dartmouth will return to the ice for one last matchup ahead of the holiday break. The Big Green and the No. 11 St. Lawrence Saints are scheduled for a battle at Appleton Arena.
With one more game to be played before the break, Fuoco said the key to success is to stick to their game.
"If we keep pushing, keep staying to what we know and how to do it best, we'll get the win," Fuoco said.
Her head coach agrees; "Now that our energy is good and we've got everybody moving in the right direction, we understand what we need to do structurally. Now it's just getting through those stressful moments and having that composure, using each other, and finishing it," Crowell said.
The Big Green and Saints will faceoff at 3 p.m. Saturday. You can watch the game live on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
