MIAMI –
Ronan Fahey led the way for the Big Green at the CSCAA Open Water Nationals in Biscayne Bay on Sunday morning. The CSCAA Open Water Nationals are an event where swimmers from all over the country across all three NCAA divisions come together to race a 5k in Biscayne Bay.
Â
""I am really proud of the way our open water crew competed today. There were some fairly high winds producing a decent amount of chop and waves and they managed that quite well. Open water racing gets very physical with other competitors and the navigation demands make it entirely different from pool swimming. Ronan's experience having competed in some 10k's really shined through with how well he was able to sight for navigation and manage his positioning with competitors. Yan competed in this event two years ago and has done some more open water training and competitions since then; though conditions were more rough this year resulting slower times for all competitors he certainly showed improvement which is exciting, said Head Coach
Milana Socha.
Â
Fahey, in his first appearance for Dartmouth in an open water event, placed 17
th of 95 swimmers with a time of 1:03:33.59.
Yan Dvoretskiy placed 32
nd after swimming a 1:05:55.58.
Tommy Erwin swam 1:06:11.58 to a 41
st place finish. Across all Division I swimmers, Fahey placed 14
th, Dvoretskiy placed 26
th, and Erwin placed 30
th.
Â
As a team, the Dartmouth men's swimmers came in seventh out of 11 teams.
Â
On the women's side,
Addy Domian swam her way to a 30
th place finish out of 108 swimmers with a time of 1:09:36.75. Across all Division I swimmers, Domian came in 28
th.
Â
In addition,
Reed Wallace,
Isaac Weigel, and
Kathy Jia competed for the Big Green in this national open water competition.
Â
"Tommy, Reed, Isaac, and Kathy all were doing this for the very first time and gained great experience. It was so fun to see them get after it, and I know they learned a lot. Addy placed quite well in a very competitive field of experienced women - she could develop into a real contender at this race in future years! Overall it was a really fun competition for all of us and I'm pleased with how they all pushed themselves out of their comfort zones today," added Socha.
Â
Dartmouth returns to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 4 when the Big Green travel to Bates College in Maine.
