PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The men's squash team returned to action Friday afternoon to face Tufts and determine final seeding in the College Squash Association National Collegiate Team Championships. The Big Green, who lost in the Round of 16 yesterday to Drexel, and Tufts who fell to Yale, were evenly matched throughout the day, but two five game victories for the Big Green proved to be the difference maker, as the Big Green defeated Tufts, 5-4.
Mac Aube at the first position and
Christian Shah at the second position led the way for the Big Green, sweeping their opponents.
Aube cruised to victory holding his opponent to only 10 points over the first two games. He sealed the match with an 11-8 third game victory, that at the time, gave the Big Green the lead in the match.
The only Big Green member to get on the board during their match against Drexel yesterday, Shah continued his positive play with a sweep at the second position. He got out to the 1-0 lead, battled for a 13-11 victory in the second game, and won the match with an 11-8 win in the third game.
In addition to the strong performances through the top of the lineup, the Big Green were able to steal victories at the fifth and eighth positions.
Quintin Campbell at the fifth position and
Callan Venkatesan at the eight position each played all five games and were able to secure important wins for the Big Green.
Campbell at the fifth position won the first game before losing two straight and finding himself down in the match. Campbell was able to turn the tides on Tufts' Jaren Chin, though, winning two straight games of his own (11-7, 11-6) to win the match for the Big Green.
Venkatesan had the opposite path to victory than Campbell as he was able to get out to a 2-0 match lead before dropping the third and fourth game, allowing Tufts' Aarav Gill the opportunity to win the fifth and final game. Despite being held to only one point in the fourth game, Venkatesan fought back, winning the fifth game and the match.
The match came down to
David Rubin at the fourth position. Rubin and
Felix Feldman were the last two Big Green playing, and when Feldman was defeated, the Jumbos tied the match. At the time, Rubin had a 2-1 match lead but Tufts' Nachiket Desai stuck around, fighting for every point to try and tie the match. Rubin held strong though, defeating Desai 12-10 in the fourth game, securing the individual win, and the match win for the Big Green.
Dartmouth will face Cornell tomorrow at 11 a.m. hoping to avenge a 6-3 loss to the Big Red on senior day.
