PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team took to the water on Saturday night at rival Brown and came out with victories in three of the five races, winning the second varsity eight, fourth varsity eight and fifth varsity eight.
"I saw some great racing against a very good, deep program," said Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "For us, obviously, our sights are always set on the varsity eight and to come up short in that race is disappointing, but in terms of the team performance today, I'm really proud and I'm optimistic. We're a program that relies on our depth and upward pressure and we had some lower crews today put out some impressive performances. Excited to get back to work."
The evening began with a matchup of the top two ranked fifth varsity eight crews, according to EARC poll. The Big Green stood at No. 1 and they left no doubt on Saturday, finishing in 6:13.93 compared to Brown's 6:25.43 amidst a heavy downpour.
Things cleared up by the 4V, and it was another Dartmouth victory. The margin was much closer, with the Big Green finishing in 6:02.01 to the Bears' 6:04.22.
Brown narrowly captured the third varsity eight with a time of 5:54.23 to Dartmouth's 5:56.13, but the Big Green picked up a big win in the second varsity eight. The sixth-ranked Dartmouth 2V bested fourth-ranked Brown with a time of 5:49.17 to the Bears' 5:51.49.
The Big Green had a strong start to the varsity eight, but around midway through, Brown surged ahead and wound up winning by just under nine seconds (5:33.41 to 5:42.08).

Dartmouth will return home next weekend to host the Lake Morey Invite with Syracuse, Boston University, Georgetown and Wisconsin all coming to town.
