FAIRLEE, Vt. — The Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team won four-of-five events on Sunday to wrap up a strong weekend at the Lake Morey Invitational. Facing Boston University and Wisconsin, the Big Green only defeat came in the second varsity eight. For the weekend, Dartmouth won 13-of-15 races while welcoming some of the nation's top crews to Lake Morey.
"First of all, it was a great weekend of racing," said
Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "Anytime we can bring together programs like Syracuse, Boston University, Wisconsin and Georgetown, and have a weekend of racing among those programs, it's going to be productive and competitive — and that's what this weekend was. We're leaving the weekend feeling like we learned some things. We know our strengths, our weaknesses and where we need to get better going into Eastern Sprints in three weeks."
The varsity eight rebounded from a loss to Syracuse Saturday by topping both Boston University and Wisconsin Sunday. The Big Green posted a time of 6:09.0, ahead of the Terriers (6:12.7) and Badgers (6:18.7).
Dartmouth's only defeat Sunday was by just 1.5 seconds in the 2V to Boston University. The Big Green had a narrow 0.4 second win in the 3V over BU (6:04.0 to 6:04.4). Dartmouth's fourth varsity eight and fifth varsity four also defeated the Terriers.
"We raced five events three times this weekend, so that's 15 races and we won 13 of them," said Allen. "That's very positive for us. The depth of the team was on display."
The Big Green return to action in three weeks, on Sunday, May 18 at Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Massachusetts.
"We're very clearly in a cluster of very tight and competitive teams," said Allen. "One to two seconds could make a big difference in our placing at sprints and the IRA after that, so we have to focus on finding speed anywhere and everywhere we can."
