WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — The Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team capped off a strong effort at the IRA National Championship on Sunday, highlighted by the second varsity eight taking home a bronze medal. It marks the third time in the last four seasons the Big Green 2V has medaled at nationals. Overall, Dartmouth finished in eighth place in the Ten Eyck Points Trophy Standings, tied with Syracuse and ahead of Ivy League crews Penn, Cornell and Columbia.
Â
The 2024 version of Dartmouth's 2V, seeded fifth in the May 22 IRCA/IRA Men's Varsity 8+ Polls, defeated both California (seeded third) and Brown (seeded fourth) with a stellar grand final. The effort came after the Big Green's varsity four captured silver on Saturday.
Â
"It feels great, but above all, it feels great to do that for the team," said senior Colin Glew, who was in the five seat. "To see the guys cheering us on from the side of the water, having everyone gives hugs when we get back, it's a great day for the boat and a great day for all of us to get a medal, but fantastic to represent Dartmouth like that on the national stage and overperform in seeding."
Â
The Big Green finished in 5:39.807, ahead of Cal (5:41.710), Harvard (5:44.960) and Brown (5:50.137). Washington took gold (5:34.317) with Princeton capturing silver (5:36.920).
Â
"Everybody committed early," said senior Luke Marshall, who was in the seven seat. "Everybody went out harder than we thought we could hold onto. It worked; we didn't have to sprint through anyone. We believed, trusted each other and went out to back our best friends. That's what this team has been about. It's awesome to finish off in this special way."
Congratulations to our second varsity eight, who took 🥉 at the IRA National Championship today!

The third varsity eight put forth a strong effort as well in its grand final, finishing fifth with a time of 5:48.972. The Big Green finished narrowly behind Brown (5:48.615) and ahead of Harvard (5:51.682). Washington, Princeton and California took first through third.
Â
The varsity eight wrapped up the day for Dartmouth by taking fifth in the petite final. The Big Green were just behind Boston University (5:38.117) and ahead of Stanford (5:44.434).
Â
"I'm pleased with the overall team performance," said Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "I'm super impressed and appreciative of the job that Sabrina Bohrer and Jack Smith have done, our two new coaches who started late summer and hit the ground running. They have done a great job of building team speed from top to bottom."
Along with their fourth straight top 10 finish, it was also the fourth straight season the Big Green finished the season with at least one medal at the IRA National Championship.
