HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Green took to the ice Saturday, welcoming the RPI Engineers on family weekend, looking to avenge an early season loss and remain undefeated in the New Year.
While the Big Green and Engineers could not find the back of the net through 65 minutes of play, earning a tie, one shootout goal was enough for the Big Green to celebrate, moving to 4-0-2 in their last six games.
In the first period, the Big Green maintained a lot of zone time, including two power plays that saw a brief stint of 5-on-3 play. Despite the zone time, Dartmouth had nothing to show for it as the Big Green and Engineers entered the second period scoreless.
The Big Green had two more power play opportunities in the second period, but the Engineers held strong, holding them to only two shots on goal between both opportunities. Dartmouth killed off a penalty of their own, also only allowing the Engineers one shot to skate into the third period in a 0-0 game.
The third period was played entirely at even strength, and despite opportunities all over the ice, neither team had anything to show for it, sending the game to sudden death overtime.
While each team had chances in the extra period, nothing was getting through RPI's Reese Keating or Michaela Hesová, sending the game to a shootout.
Only one goal was scored in the shootout, coming off the stick of Big Green captain
Lauren Messier.
"
Vanessa Stamper on the bench said 'try this move', so I came in on the right side, cut middle and shot far side and it went in, so credit to Stamper," Messier said about her goal.
While the game will go down as a tie, Head Coach
Maura Crowell said the goal for her team is always to win and get to celebrate.
"We want to win shootouts, whether there are more points on the line or not. We want to celebrate at the end, especially on home ice," Crowell said. "We're always trying to win, trying to make good decisions with who we put out there on the ice. And I think I said in the locker room, Michaela Hesová has been our secret weapon on the shootout win. So credit her with her first shutout win of the season and just being the backbone of our program all year long."
Hesová made 26 saves on the night, including four in the overtime period and all three RPI shootout opportunities.
With another conference weekend concluded, Dartmouth will shift its focus to two more strong opponents, Cornell and Colgate at home next weekend, looking to continue to build.
"We've been building some big momentum in the year and we're looking to keep rolling with that," Messier said. "We have a big week of work ahead and then we're going to roll into Colgate and Cornell at home, which should be another two really tough games that we're ready to bring our all for."
Crowell echoed her captain.
"[This win] is just a culmination of all the things we went through in the first half and finding ways to win games, finding ways to close out ties and just learning and putting things together so we're feeling good about our game," Crowell said. "I think we can play any style of hockey we need to play… So next weekend we have two formidable opponents, but we're excited and we're at home and we want to put on a good show anytime we're in Thompson."
The Big Green will welcome the Cornell Big Red on Friday, January 24 for a 6 p.m. puck drop before hosting Alumni Day on Saturday against Colgate.
