HANOVER, N.H. – On Friday, the Dartmouth women's hockey team welcomed the Cornell Big Red to Thompson Arena, looking to earn their first win over a nationally ranked opponent and remain undefeated in their last seven games.
The Big Red tied the game late to force overtime where the game still remained scoreless, as Dartmouth and Cornell skated to a 2-2 tie.
Despite being outshot 9-2 in the first period, the Big Green held Cornell off the board as the two teams went into the second period tied scoreless.
Just over halfway through the middle frame, Cornell drew a penalty, taking only 13 seconds and one shot on goal to break the score and go up 1-0. Shortly after the Big Red goal, Dartmouth earned a power-play opportunity of their own but were held off the board.
With two minutes to play in the period, Dartmouth found a way to score.
Laura Fuoco put a puck on net that just dribbled over the goal line, tying the game at one and sending the game to the third period tied.
The Big Green started the third on the power play, looking to go up a goal early. The Big Red were able to kill off the penalty as Annelies Bergmann stopped the two Dartmouth shots on the advantage.
Dartmouth continued to push, putting six more shots on net in the final frame. It wasn't until under two minutes to play that the Big Green would find the back of the net again, once more thanks to
Laura Fuoco.
"I was just getting pucks on net. We knew this was a big goalie, so just getting her high and low… Just getting pucks on net and keep firing them away," Fuoco said. "I wouldn't have my two goals without
Mia Buonarosa working her butt off to get those pucks, so it was a team effort."
Cornell now put up a fight, pulling its goaltender and playing the final minute and a half 6-on-5. With 11 seconds to play, the Big Red netted one, tying the game to force overtime.
The Big Green had a quiet overtime period offensively as Cornell controlled possession, despite taking a penalty and putting the Big Green on an advantage. Dartmouth was able to hold off the Big Red, earning the tie but sending the game to a shootout.
Fuoco was the first to attempt the shootout for either team, ripping a shot past Bergmann to put the Big Green up 1-0. Cornell would score on their first two attempts to earn the shootout victory.
In net for the Big Green, Michaels Hesová made 27 saves, including nine in both the first and third periods.
While the Big Green were not able to come away with the win, Head Coach
Maura Crowell says her team is embracing the 'it takes everybody' style and continues to credit her first-year netminder for giving them a chance to win every night.
"I just really like the way we're playing. It's everybody. Anybody that steps on the ice is doing her job and doing it well, giving us chances to win. I felt like we came back really hard when we needed to. Everybody really needed to be locked in," Crowell said. "So I thought just an all-around, excellent effort, starting with Michaela [Hesová]."
With one more game to play on the weekend against No. 5 Colgate, Fuoco says the goal is to continue to play their game.
"I think our mindset it just to keep playing to our identity. We have to be the hardest team to play against out there," Fuoco said. "So keep going. Keep getting pucks in deep, pucks on net, and just communicating. I think that we can compete with any team in this league."
