HANOVER, N.H. – After tying the number six national ranked team in the country Friday night, the Big Green returned to action against the No. 5 Colgate Raiders.
Dartmouth gave up two goals in the first period, including one early, and were unable to find a way out, ultimately falling to Colgate, 4-1.
The Raiders started the scoring early, opening a 1-0 lead just under two minutes into the game. Right before the 15-minute mark, they scored again, doubling their lead to take a 2-0 score into the first intermission.
In the second period, the Big Green had two power play opportunities but were unable to convert on either. Despite having to kill off two penalties, Colgate found the back of the net first in the middle frame, scoring with just under two minutes to play in the second.
One minute and three seconds later though,
Cally Dixon carried the puck from her own defensive zone all the way to the other end of the ice, picking her spot and beating the Colgate netminder to cut into the Raiders lead, making the score 3-1 Colgate headed into the final period of regulation.
Just before the halfway mark of the third, Dartmouth found themselves on the penalty kill. The Big Green successfully squashed any Colgate chances, killing the penalty to keep it a 3-1 game.
With 2:59 to play and down two goals, the Big Green pulled Michaela Hesová from the net. Colgate was able to find the empty net, sealing the 4-1 victory.
Hesová made 16 saves on the day.
Despite the loss, Head Coach
Maura Crowell says she liked the way her team played.
"I thought the third period was our best. I thought we played with confidence. We played more aggressive, really put pressure on them," Crowell said postgame. "It's a tough weekend when you play Cornell and Colgate, two highly ranked, very talented teams, back-to-back. So overall, I'm really proud of the way we played this weekend."
After playing four straight games at Thompson Arena, Dartmouth heads on the road for four straight, starting with Princeton and Quinnipiac, two teams the Big Green played close games with in the first half of the season.
"We haven't been on the road in a while, so it's about time to go out there and get into some other buildings. I think that's important for us," Crowell said. "Playoffs are going to be on the road, so let's get used to getting on the road and winning games. I'm excited about where our team is right now versus when we played [Princeton and Quinnipiac] earlier."
"The second half is almost like a completely different season. So, I expect us to bring our best and I'm sure they'll bring theirs," Crowell added.
Puck drop on Friday, January 31 at Princeton is set for 6 p.m. while Saturday's matchup with Quinnipiac is set for 3 p.m. Both games are available to stream on ESPN+ while Saturday's game will also be available locally on NESN.
The Big Green will return to Thompson Arena on February 14 and 15 for their final regular season games of the 2024-25 season. Dartmouth will also honor its four seniors after the game on February 15.
