PRINCETON, N.J. – The Dartmouth women's hockey team took to the road this weekend, starting at Princeton for the first of four straight road games.
Despite collecting goals in each of the first two periods and holding a lead twice, the Tigers came roaring back, scoring a goal in the third and in overtime to defeat the Big Green, 3-2.
Dartmouth found the back of the net just over the halfway mark into the first period. A loose puck in the crease was batted in by
Bridget Pringle for her second of the year, giving the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
Princeton struck first in the second period, capitalizing on a power play opportunity. The Big Green were able to respond just over five minutes later when the Big Green found another loose puck in the crease. This time,
Shae Messner found the puck and buried it, regiving the Big Green a one goal lead.
Each team had power play opportunities in the third period, but neither were able to capitalize, keeping the Big Green up by one goal. With just over seven minutes to play though, the Tigers found the back of the net again, once again tying the game.
While both teams had possession and chances through the final seven minutes, the game remained knotted at two goals apiece, forcing the overtime period.
Dartmouth started the five-minute period with possession, generating a few chances, but nothing to break the tie. Just under two minutes into the overtime period, the Tigers sealed the comeback, scoring the third goal to earn the overtime victory.
Michaela Hesová made 33 saves between the pipes today, including 16 in the third period.
After the game, Head Coach
Maura Crowell said the Big Green really battled to get into the game and she was proud that they were able to hold on to force overtime.
"We've been talking about grabbing ECAC points every time we play," Crowell said. "But I think if we had brought a better performance from start to finish, it would have been a different result for us."
Dartmouth returns to the ice Saturday, facing off against the No. 10 Quinnipiac Bobcats.
Crowell said the goal for her team headed into Saturday is to continue to learn.
"Evaluate the things that are within your control. Those are some categories that we pay close attention to, and I think our athletes need to take a look at that, make sure they're ready to go tomorrow because we're going to be in every game that we play, which is really the exciting part," Crowell said.
"It's a matter of finishing out. So again, really good to get a point here on the road at a tough barn to play in. But I think we could have gotten more and that's the message," Crowell added.
Puck drop on Saturday, February 1 against the Bobcats is set for 3 p.m. You can stream the game on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
