HANOVER, N.H. – Despite giving up a goal early in the first, the Big Green shut down the Crimson for the rest of the game, allowing only 24 shots on goal to skate to a 1-1 tie with Harvard.
Dartmouth did score the lone goal of the shootout to earn the extra point in ECAC Hockey standings. With Saturday's result, the Big Green finish the week 2-0-1 and move to 2-14-1 overall.
The Harvard Crimson opened an early lead Saturday, scoring only 11 seconds into the game. Despite the deficit, Dartmouth outshot the Crimson 22-6 through the first 20 minutes, putting the most shots on net in a period all season.
It took just under four minutes for the Big Green to pull even though.
Lauren Messier scored her second goal in as many games to tie the game through the remainder of the first and into the second period.
In the middle frame, Dartmouth outshot the Crimson 16-8. Despite only eight shots on goal, Harvard was able to net one, briefly pulling ahead 2-1. The Big Green challenged the play, and the goal was overturned on an offsides, keeping the game knotted at one.
The third period had plenty of action, including a Crimson 5-on-3 power play that lasted nearly a full two minutes. The Big Green stayed strong defensively, killing off the penalty to force overtime.
Head Coach
Maura Crowell credited her team's strong defense in key moments, keeping them in the game.
"To win big games, you're going to have to play really good defense, and that's always been something we've done well since the start of the season," Crowell said. "To see it today in really big spots with the 5-on-3 for 1:55 and then 4-on-3 in overtime for 1:26… those were really gutsy performances by our penalty killers."
Defense continued to play a role for the Big Green in overtime, as Dartmouth also killed off a 4-on-3 Crimson opportunity to force a shootout. Two of goaltender Michaela Hesová's 23 saves came in the final seconds, keeping the Big Green alive.
Neither team was able to net a goal through the first three rounds of the shootout.
Cally Dixon, went first in the fourth round, netting a goal and putting the Big Green up 1-0 in the shootout.
"The three ahead of me… sort of did a fake move and that didn't really work. We had a couple shots in between," Dixon said. "I saw her kind of move on the first one and our goalies were telling me on the bench to get her to move, look for the five hole. So that's kind of what I did and got it in."
Hesová made the final save, securing the extra point and the shootout victory for the Big Green.
"I was thinking I just have to save everything for my team because they really put their lives on the line. We had so many blocked shots, especially on the [penalty kill]," Hesová said. "I was just trying to save everything essentially. Luckily we do 'Showcase Showdown' every single week so I get at least 10 shootouts so I was prepared."
With the season series against the Crimson closed, the Big Green shift their focus to the final nonconference game of the season, a midweek matchup at St. Anselm.
Crowell says the focus for her team is to take care of themselves.
"It's so fun to be able to play this much hockey in such a short amount of time. We go back to classes on Monday so sort of back to the real world," Crowell said. "Just preparing for school and preparing for our games at Saint Anselm on Monday."
The Big Green will return to Thompson Arena on Friday, January 17, welcoming the Union Garnet Chargers to Hanover for the Cancer Awareness Game.
