MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Big Green traveled to Saint Anselm for their final nonconference game of the season, netting nine goals from eight different goal scorers in the 9-1 victory over the Hawks.
With the win, Dartmouth moves to 3-14-1 overall.
It only took the Big Green 2:20 to get on the board.
Shae Messner got the puck right off the faceoff and beat the Hawks goaltender, putting the Big Green up 1-0. With just under two minutes remaining in the period, Dartmouth doubled its lead.
Maura Fiorenza scored her first goal of the season on a shot from the point, putting the Big Green up 2-0 headed into the second period.
As time expired in the first, Dartmouth drew a penalty, going on the power play with a clean sheet of ice. 58 seconds into the 5-on-4 and second period,
Cally Dixon redirected an
Izee Powell shot from the point, scoring her first of the night to extend the Big Green's lead to three.
Not even a minute later,
Ella Inglis found herself on the breakaway, scoring her first goal with the Big Green and making the score 4-0.
"I had a really great opportunity with the breakaway and I was really lucky and I saw a lot of space top left," Inglis said. "I've been doing those shots a lot in practice so it was nice to finally get rewarded on it."
The Big Green would score two more goals in the second period, both coming before the halfway mark.
Laura Fuoco sent the puck in front from close to the goal line, finding the stick of
Mia Buonarosa who tipped it in.
Dixon's second goal came on a breakaway, just over four minutes after Buonarosa's goal, to make the score 6-0 Big Green through 40 minutes.
3:42 seconds into the final period,
Bridget Pringle got her second of the season to put the Big Green up by seven. The Hawks finally got on the board at the 8:40 mark, making the score 7-1.
Fuoco and
Hamilton Doster would cap off the scoring for the Big Green at 10:57 and 15:45, sealing the 9-1 Big Green victory.
Dartmouth put 66 shots on goal against the Hawks, 20 in each of the first two periods and 26 in the final 20 minutes, beating their season high set last Saturday against Harvard (44).
While the shots helped generate offense, Head Coach
Maura Crowell says it's a confidence builder for her team and that it emphasizes an important message she's conveyed all season.
"It's a lot of confidence… And I think we keep getting better and better," Crowell said. "We're finding our stride a little bit here in the second half. We had some time and space to make some plays today and I love the way we're attacking the net and continuing to get better."
"We talk about it all the time; it's going to take everybody, and we want to do it together," Crowell added. "I thought that was a great example of team play from start to finish."
Grace Zhan, who made her first start in net of the season, stopped 16 of the 17 shots she faced.
"I just had the mentality of one shot after the other and just stay focused and be on top of things," Zhan said about her performance. "My team helped me out a lot today."
Crowell also praised her goaltender, saying "It was great to have her back and healthy and ready to play. I thought the team supported her well so she could get comfortable back there. She definitely saw some high end shots as the game went on and she stood tall and was ready for the task."
With nonconference play wrapped up, the focus for the Big Green shifts to the final ten ECAC Hockey games, beginning with Union and RPI at Thompson Arena next weekend.
Both Zhan and Inglis said this win continues to provide confidence as the team heads down the stretch.
"Our team's really been building the past few weeks and our positivity off the bench is as high as ever," Inglis said. "We're just really excited to get out there."
The Big Green will next hit the ice at home on Friday, January 17, hosting the Union Garnet Chargers at 6 p.m., followed by a battle with the RPI Engineers on Saturday, January 18 at 3 p.m.
