HANOVER, N.H.—The Dartmouth volleyball team completed a weekend sweep on Saturday with a three set win over Columbia.
Set One (W, 25-21)
The opening set saw six ties and three lead changes as the teams looked to take an early lead. After the first 22 points of the set the teams were tied at 11 and the tight set continued into the media timeout as Columbia had a 15-14 lead at the break. The team kept battling for the majority of the set until the Big Green had a 22-19 lead which forced a Columbia timeout. The Big Green weren't phased by the timeout and build the lead to 24-21 which led to Columbia taking its second timeout. Kauany Gutz ended the set with a kill to take the first set.
The Big Green hit a remarkable .433 in the first set as they had 14 kills with one error on 30 attempts. Both Gutz and LaFata turned in five kills in the first set while Zori Brown added two and Elle McCreery and Ava Roberts each added a kill. Both Ellie Mattox and Sophia Gagnepain had five assists while EllaMae Fitzgerald and McCreery added an assist. Raeli Smith, Gagnepain and McCreery each had an ace in the opening set. The Big Green had three blocks in the set as McCreery and LaFata each had two block assists, Brown and Roberts each added a block assist.
Set Two (W, 27-25)
The second set was a close set that saw just one lead change and two ties. The only lead change came with the score being tied at 25. The Lions led for most of the set and had a lead as big as seven until the Big Green started a comeback following a timeout with Columbia leading 19-13. Dartmouth took a 26-25 lead on a Gutz kill and the Big Green took the set after a Columbia attack error.
Gutz had six kills in the set while the trio of Brown, Smith and LaFata each had two kills. Gagnepain had six assists in the set while Mattox added five and Julia Gojcaj added a pair of assists. The duo of Smith and Roberts combined for the only Dartmouth block in the set. Brown led the team with five digs while Mattox, Fitzgerald, Gagnepain, and Gutz each had four digs.
Set Three (W, 25-21)
Columbia jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the third set but the Big Green took a 14-13 lead ahead of the media timeout. The Big Green held a 15-13 lead at the media timeout, out of the timeout, the Lions tied the set at 17. With the scored tied at 19, the Big Green called timeout. The timeout worked as the Big Green took the next two points which led to a Columbia timeout. The timeout didn't slow down the Big Green as they won the set 25-21.
The Big Green spread the love in the third set as six different players had a kill. Gutz had three kills, Brown, McCreery, and LaFata each had two while Roberts and Smith each had one. Mattox had five of Dartmouth's 11 assists while Gagnepain had four and Fitzgerald and LaFata each had one. The Big Green tallied four blocks with McCreery having three block assists and LaFata having two block assists. Brown, Roberts, and Smith all added a block assist. Eight Big Green players had a dig in the set with Gagnepain having a team high five.
Gutz notched her third straight double double as she had 14 kills and 11 digs. Gagnepain also tallied a double double with 15 assists and 12 digs in the match. The Big Green had eight blocks in the match with McCreery leading the way with five block assists.
The Big Green close out the home portion of their schedule next weekend as Brown and Yale travel to Hanover. Dartmouth starts the weekend against Brown on Friday, Nov. 7 at 6 PM. Dartmouth and Yale square off on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 5 PM. Prior to the match, Dartmouth will honor its senior class.
