HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey, receiving votes in the USA Hockey poll for the first time since 2015, welcomed the Harvard Crimson to Thompson Arena for the first of a home and home with the Crimson.
The Crimson got out to a quick start, but a third period push allowed the Big Green to secure the 1-1 tie. Dartmouth moves to 2-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in ECAC Hockey play.
Harvard got out to a fast start, putting six shots on goal in the first period and taking the lead just over five minutes into the game. Michaela Hesová made the initial save, but the Crimson buried a loose rebound to take the 1-0 lead.
The Crimson continued to outshoot the Big Green in the second period, tallying nine to Dartmouth's 6. Hesová stood tall, stopping all nine shots that came her way. Each team had a power play opportunity in the middle frame, but the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Crimson headed into the third period.
The ice shifted in Dartmouth's favor in the third period. The Big Green outshot Harvard 8-2, and were finally able to break through just before the halfway mark. The rebound off an
Ella Inglis shot found its way to
Sydney Putrah. She put it on net for
Shae Messner, who got a touch, before
Mia Buonarosa was able to corral it and push it past the Crimson goaltender to tie the game at one.
The Big Green killed off one more penalty while the game was tied, but neither team was able to pull ahead, forcing overtime.
Shots and chances were pretty even in the five-minute overtime frame; Harvard outshooting Dartmouth, 3-2, but both goaltenders stood strong, as the game ended in a tie.
The two teams did play a shootout, and it took five rounds before someone was able to find the back of the net.
Izee Powell walked straight down the middle, ripping the puck glove side high to put her team up 1-0 in the shootout. Hesová made the final save asked of her, as the Big Green and Crimson earned the tie, but Dartmouth came away on top.
Hesová finished the day with 18 total saves.
"We really struggled to get moving for the first 40, and Harvard came up here ready to play," Head Coach
Maura Crowell said after the game. "I think they were more ready than we were, but also credit us with getting it going and scratching and clawing back to get back into that game, getting that tying goal, and then obviously getting through three on three and winning the shootout at the end."
While Harvard opened Friday's contest hot, the Big Green will have the opportunity to have a similar start Saturday, when they take on the Crimson in Cambridge, and it starts by playing the way the Big green played in the final 20 minutes on Friday.
"We had the puck a little bit more, played with more poise and confidence," Crowell said. "I think if we do that tomorrow for 60 plus whatever minutes, we'll be in better shape."
Puck drop against the Crimson on Saturday, November 8 is set for 3 p.m. You can watch the game on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
