HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth scored goals in the first and third period Friday, downing the No. 7 St. Lawrence Saints 2-0 at Thompson Arena.
This is the first time the Big Green have beat the Saints since 2021.
Dartmouth was ready to go right from the jump, scoring just over seven minutes into the period.
Mia Buonarosa went in hard on the forecheck, sending the puck to
Lauren Messier in front of the net who gave the Big Green the lead.
"All night long we were getting pucks in deep, getting pucks over the blue line, and having a really strong F1," Messier said. "Mia [Buonarosa] had a really goof F1 on that play. Got the puck out front and I was lucky enough to slip it five hole."
The Big Green and Saints both tallied their most shots on goal of the game in the second period, Dartmouth tallying seven and St. Lawrence tallying 17. Both goaltenders stood strong, not allowing any goals to keep it a one goal game in favor of the Big Green.
In the third, Dartmouth got insurance.
Shae Messner picked up the puck and walked deeper into the zone, ripping a shot that trickled off of
Laura Fuoco and through the Saints goaltender to put the Big Green up 2-0.
While two goals were enough to secure the win, the Big Green also got a dominant performance from Michaela Hesová in net. She made 36 saves in the shutout victory, including 11 in the first frame and 17 in the middle period.
"I saw just about everything in that game," Hesová said about her play." I saw my teammates putting their bodies on the line as always. They had great sticks today in the defensive zone which I think played in our favor a lot…I'm just grateful we could have gotten those three points.
Head Coach
Maura Crowell was proud of the way her team played right from the jump, something that helped the Big Green to success.
"From puck drop until the final buzzer, we were working together, playing connected, going hard, turning over pucks, coming back hard, and an unbelievable goaltending performance from Michaela again," Crowell said. "That's been our recipe all season long. When we're good, those are the things that need to be good. And we had it going tonight."
The Big Green return to Thompson Arena Saturday, hosting the No. 8 Clarkson Golden Knights for Senior Night and their final regular season game at home.
Crowell says the message for her team is not different than it has been but will continue to emphasize their structure.
"We play simple, hard, and structured. When we do that, when everybody does that and we do it as a collective unit, we're a good team and we're really hard to play against," Crowell said. "Obviously, Clarkson plays a little bit of a different style, so we'll get back to the tape and make sure we're all buttoned up on Clarkson and ready to go."
Messier echoed her coach about Saturday's season finale, noting it will be bittersweet.
"I've been fortunate enough to play here for four really amazing years, so tomorrow's going to be a nice little cherry on top. It's the same message as today. Keep playing our Big Green game, simple, hard, and structured hockey."
Puck drop Saturday against the Golden Knights is set for 3 p.m. with a senior ceremony to happen on the ice postgame. The first 100 fans in attendance will also receive a Big Green Hockey picture frame featuring the Class of 2025.
