HANOVER, N.H. – After a dominant victory over No. 7 St. Lawrence Friday night, the Big Green welcomed the No. 8 Clarkson Golden Knights to Thompson Arena for their regular season finale.
The Big Green and Golden Knights headed into the third period knotted at one, but two quick back-to-back goals by Clarkson put them on top and helped secure a 4-1 victory over Dartmouth.
With the loss, the Big Green finish the regular season 5-20-3 overall and 3-16-3 in ECAC Hockey play.
Clarkson came out of the gate firing, throwing 19 shots at Big Green goaltender Michaela Hesová. She stopped 18 of them, not allowing a goal until past the 17-minute mark of the period, as the Golden Knights headed into the break up 1-0.
"Clarkson put a ton of pressure on us at various points in the first period, but I thought we handled it well. We got out feet under us, came back at them, put some pressure on them," Head Coach
Maura Crowell said about her team's play in the first period.
The Big Green and Golden Knights played an entertaining second period, one dominated by special teams play. Each team had three power play opportunities, including a stretch of four-on-four hockey.
Hesová made 16 saves in the second, stopping every shot she faced. Dartmouth's offense also converted, as
Lauren Messier scored her second goal of the weekend to tie the game.
Dayton O'Donoghue tied up the puck in the corner. It squirted loose to
Ella Inglis who threw a shot off the Golden Knights goaltender and into the crease, where Messier was set up to bury the rebound and tie the game.
"The second period was wild, a lot of penalty kills, a lot of power plays," Crowell said. "Our penalty kill was dynamite tonight. Clarkson's second in the country in the power play. To shut them down like we did, that was excellent."
"That was kind of a chaotic period, but I thought we thrived in the chaos which is really impressive for our team," Crowell added.
Just over five minutes into the third period, the Golden Knights scored a goal to put them up by one. It didn't take long for Clarkson to get insurance, scoring its third goal of the game just 15 seconds later.
Dartmouth did try to pull Hesová and generate some offense, but the Golden Knights got a lucky empty net goal to seal the victory.
Hesová finished the game with 47 saves, bringing her season total to 818, tying the program record for most saves in a season.
With the regular season wrapped, Dartmouth will shift its focus to the opening round of ECAC Hockey playoffs next weekend. Despite the loss on Saturday, Crowell said the entire weekend is a positive for her team.
"This whole weekend really should be incredibly encouraging for our team. Beating number seven last night, being in a one, one battle with Clarkson," Crowell said. "When we learn that we can play really well against good teams, I think getting back to our detail…simple, hard, and structured…When we do that well, we put ourselves in a great spot to win hockey games."
