HANOVER, N.H. — Trailing 4-2 after one quarter, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team had a seven-goal outburst in the second to open a 9-5 halftime lead, on the way to a 13-11 win over Bucknell in the season opener on Saturday. Colorado College transfer
Thomas Power led the way offensively with five goals and seven points in his Dartmouth debut, while
Mason Morel made 16 saves in goal.
"Incredibly happy for the guys," said Dartmouth head coach
Sean Kirwan. "A lot of hard work and commitment was put into this whole entire process. For them to be rewarded with a win is always what you're looking for as a coach and doesn't always happen that way. Couldn't be happier about the effort, the energy and togetherness that our guys showed for 60 minutes."
Power's five goals marked a career high at any level, with his previous high at Colorado College being four for the former Division III All-American.
Along with Power's seven points,
Emmett Paradine added two goals and an assist, while
Colin McGill scored twice as well.
Brandon Ventarola filled up the stat sheet with a goal, five groundballs and caused turnover. Defensively,
Joe Azelby had six groundballs and a caused turnover.
First-year
Spencer Reagan was stellar in his collegiate debut facing off, winning 16-of-24 with four groundballs.
Consecutive goals from
Tyler Juhlin and Power gave the Big Green an early 2-1 lead, but Bucknell responded with three in a row to take a 4-2 advantage after one quarter.
Early in the second, Dartmouth scored three times in the span of 2:30 to take the lead back. The second marker was a highlight-reel goal, coming full field against the Bison's 10-man ride as
Griffin O'Neil fired it into the net from Dartmouth's defensive zone. Ventarola followed with a goal to give the Big Green a 5-4 lead, followed by goals from Paradine and Power to make it 7-4 with 7:01 on the clock.
Dartmouth ended with a 7-1 second-quarter advantage to take a 9-5 halftime lead.
Bucknell clawed back in the second half, scoring six of the first eight goals to pull even at 11 with 11:29 left in the fourth. But that's when
Harrison Keith scored his first collegiate goal off a feed from Power with 8:02 on the clock. Then, Power added his fifth of the afternoon for a 13-11 lead with 4:54 remaining, which proved to be the final.
Final shots were 39-38 in favor of Dartmouth with the Big Green holding a 33-20 edge in groundballs. Both teams took good care of the ball, with Bucknell turning the ball over 12 times to eight times for Dartmouth.
Saturday marked the Big Green's first-ever win against the Bison, coming off a 15-13 defeat last season in the first meeting between the two sides.
"Our conditioning was great. I felt like we were fresh, even in the fourth quarter when the game was on the line," said Kirwan. "I thought our guys scrapped. It looked like we did pretty well in the groundball battle, which is always a big factor for us, to out groundball a really tough team on the ground in Bucknell. We always say it starts and ends there. For guys to do that for 60 minutes was really important to get that win."
The Big Green have a quick turnaround as they play at UMass on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
