BOSTON — The Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team put forth another strong effort on Saturday in sweeping racing against Boston University. The Big Green were victorious in all three races of the morning, capturing the Bill Cup with their varsity eight victory.
"I thought it was a good team performance," said
Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "I was glad to see our lower boats take a step forward. That was a big positive in challenging conditions. There was a white capping tailwind and I thought all of our boats did a really good job of staying aggressive and not being afraid to make mistakes, which paid off."
One week after beating Yale for the Olympic Axe for the first time in the trophy's 21-year history, the varsity eight put forth a dominant 13-second win over the Terriers. The Big Green (ranked sixth in the IRCA/IRA Men's Poll), finished in 5:45.1, ahead of the Terriers (ranked 12th), who finished in 5:58.7.
"The BU varsity threw a lot at them in the first 800 meters or so.," said Allen. "Our guys did a good job of staying patient and staying together and were able to break the race open around the 1,000-meter mark."
Meanwhile, the second varsity eight pulled out the win by just over two seconds, 5:56.2 to 5:58.6.
"The 2V had a great first thousand meters, then caught a pretty significant crab and did a good job of recovering, sticking together and managing the second half of the race and pulling out the win," said Allen.
The teams' remaining boats then squared off, with the Big Green's third varsity eight posting a time of 5:58.2, followed by their 4V (6:00.5), BU's 3V (6:14.1) and Dartmouth's 5V (6:31.6).
The Big Green have next weekend off from racing before hosting the Lake Morey Invitational two weekends from now in Fairlee, Vermont.
"We're just trying to take it one week and race at a time," said Allen. "We've got two weeks to work hard and run some selection and get ready for the Lake Morey Invite where we're going to see Syracuse, Columbia and Wisconsin. It will be three quality opponents in one weekend."
