Dartmouth was perfect on the day

FAIRLEE, Vt. — The sixth-ranked Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team wrapped up a stellar weekend at the Lake Morey Invitational on Sunday when the Big Green swept racing against Ivy League rival Columbia. In three sessions over two days, Dartmouth was perfect in racing in boat-to-boat matchups (the only defeat was the Big Green's 5V against Syracuse's 4V).

The regatta featured Boston University, Georgetown, Wisconsin, Columbia and Syracuse all making the trip to Lake Morey, approximately 20 minutes north of Dartmouth's campus.

"It was a successful weekend," said Dartmouth assistant coach Jack Smith. "We raced some top-level teams from all across the northeast and the country and we're really happy with how the guys did and how well they executed what we asked them to do. We tried some things, some different combinations, and the guys responded really well. They did their jobs and at the end of the day, got some good results to show for it."

On Sunday, Dartmouth's varsity eight began by posting a time of 5:42.6, nearly 11 seconds ahead of Columbia. The 2V had a similar margin, being exactly 21 seconds (5:46 to 6:07). The 3V's time of 5:50.1 was more than 13 seconds better than second-place Wisconsin while the 4V captured a tight 1.4 second win over Syracuse (5:51.5 to 5:52.9).

"We won all of our races at the boat level. Pretty much an undefeated weekend, which is really a credit to the work we put in as a team over the winter," said senior Billy Bender. "I think we've done a really good job of transiting our fitness from the winter into rowing well on the water, moving together as a group."

The Big Green return to Lake Morey next Sunday morning when they host Northeastern.
