HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey wrapped a three-game homestand Saturday against the Brown Bears, a team currently receiving votes in the national polls.
The Big Green and Bears were scoreless through 65 minutes of regulation and overtime, sending the game to a shootout, where
Meredith Jensen was the lone skater to find the back of the net.
Dartmouth now moves to 4-13-3 on the season.
Brown seemed to dominate in the first period, outshooting the Big Green 17-2. Despite the shots on the board, Head Coach
Maura Crowell liked the way her team played.
"They outshot us quite a bit in the first period… But if you were here, I feel like we were still creating offense. We were possessing the puck a lot, so it wasn't showing on the score sheet necessarily, but we were in the o-zone, which was a step in the right direction," Crowell said.
While the Big Green only tallied two shots on goal, they thought one found the back of the net, but a goaltender interference call took it off the board, keeping the game scoreless.
Brown continued to push in the second period, outshooting the Big Green 13-6. Michaela Hesová remained dominant in net, stopping all shots that came her way to keep the game scoreless.
Defense continued to dominant on both sides in the third period. Shot totals were a bit more even, as the Big Green were only outshot 6-5, but the game remained scoreless to force overtime.
Dartmouth had the shot advantage in the five minute three-on-three period, a 5-4 advantage over the Bears, but both goaltenders were up to the challenge, ending the game in a tie but sending it to a shootout.
Goaltending continued to impress, as six full rounds of the shootout were completed before the puck found its way in. In the seventh round, Jensen beat the Bears' goaltender and Hesová made one final save to win the shootout.
After Friday's game, Crowell said her team needed to play better in front of Hesová, a feat she thinks her team accomplished.
"We were more physical around our net. Teams are going to get chances. We want to try to eliminate those second chances, third chances for sure, and I thought we did a better job of that," Crowell said. "Taking away sticks and bodies, blocks, obviously another way of doing that. So, that's great to see and just a great bounce back game from."
The Big Green tallied 18 blocks Saturday, while Hesová made 40 saves en route to the shutout, bringing her weekend total to 77.
Crowell said the message to her team all game was that defense wins games, especially in ECAC Hockey. She noted it took everyone on the bench, as well as Hesová.
Dartmouth will now shift its focus to next weekend as it heads on the road to face Quinnipiac and Princeton.
"We want to springboard into the week. That's what I just told the team in the locker room. They're feeling great. Michaela had a shutout in the shootout. So, we're feeling good about the way we played, and we want to have a great week of practice and let that carry into the weekend," Crowell said.
The Big Green will first face Quinnipiac on Friday, January 16. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. You can watch the game on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
