HAMDEN, Conn. – Dartmouth women's hockey traveled to Connecticut for the first of two ECAC Hockey games this weekend, taking on the No. 6 Quinnipiac Bobcats on Friday. An early Bobcats' lead was enough as Quinnipiac went on to defeat the Big Green, 4-0.
With the loss, the Big Green move to 4-14-3 overall and 2-8-3 in conference play.
The Bobcats wasted no time pressuring the Big Green, pinning them in their defensive zone for the first few minutes. Quinnipiac was able to find the back of the net, taking a 1-0 lead just 1:56 in.
With just under five minutes to play in the period, Dartmouth committed its first penalty, sending the Bobcats to the power play. Quinnipiac was able to capitalize, doubling its lead headed into the second period.
Despite the two-goal deficit, Head Coach
Maura Crowell liked the way her team played and responded, especially in the middle frame.
"I thought as the game wore on, we gave them fits, especially in the second period. Our forecheck was cranking. We turned over the puck a lot, generated 11 shots on net and some grade-A looks, 2-on-1s, really good plays," Crowell said. "I was really proud of the way we bounced back."
The Big Green entered the third period on the power play as the Bobcats took an elbowing penalty with just 17 seconds to play in the second period. Just 1:22 into the third as the penalty was about to expire, the Bobcats found the back of the net shorthanded to take a 3-0 lead.
Quinnipiac's pressure continued as the Bobcats scored their fourth goal of the game just 33 seconds later.
Michaela Hesová got the start in net for the Big Green, making 35 total saves including 13 in the first period and 15 in the second.
While Crowell said the start of the third period was tough to come back from, she added, "if you take some of those moments out, the overall performance tonight was really good from a lot of people."
The Big Green will be back in action on Saturday, taking on another ranked opponent in the Princeton Tigers.
Crowell said her team continues to improve game to game, getting better looks and creating offense around the net. The biggest focus for her team against the Tigers, eliminating the mental errors.
"We just have to tidy up some of those mental mistakes that we've been talking about, and our team's aware of it which is great," Crowell said. "They want to get better at managing the adversity as well. So, I think that's a step in the right direction."
Puck drop on Saturday, January 17 against the #9 Princeton Tigers is set for 3 p.m. You can watch the game on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
