PRINCETON, N.J. – Dartmouth women's hockey wrapped its weekend road trip against ECAC Hockey and Ivy League foe #9 Princeton Saturday. The Tigers got out to a quick start, going on to defeat the Big Green, 5-0.
With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 4-15-3 and 2-9-3 in ECAC Hockey play.
Saturday's game against the Tigers started similarly to Friday night's loss to No. 6 Quinnipiac. Princeton opened the scoring just 2:41 into the first period.
Within the next four minutes, the Tigers added two goals, taking a 3-0 lead over the Big Green just 6:27 into the game, forcing Head Coach
Maura Crowell to take a timeout.
"It's disappointing, right? That's what we talked about a lot after yesterday, and we're looking to make strides every time we play," Crowell said about her team's start. "To get out there and not be ready against a very good Princeton team, that's unacceptable. So, we wanted to stop that and address it again, and I think the timeout helped."
After giving up three goals on only five Tigers' shots, Dartmouth settled in. The Big Green kept the Tigers off the scoreboard in the second period and stuck to their way of play.
"We played our systems, we played tough. We played fearless on the forecheck. We got in front of the net a little bit. We played connected in the defensive zone, took away time and space from [the Tigers]," Crowell said about her team's play in the second period.
The Big Green continued to play that way for the first half of the third period as well, but Princeton capitalized just before the halfway mark of the period. Exactly four minutes later, Princeton found the back of the net for the fifth time.
Michaela Hesová made her sixth consecutive start between the pipes for the Big Green. Despite allowing three goals in the first period, Hesová went on to finish the game with 46 total saves. Saturday's game against the Tigers is now her fourth straight having tallied 30 or more saves.
The Big Green will be back in action next weekend, returning to Thompson Arena to host the Clarkson Golden Knights and St. Lawrence Saints.
While the Big Green played well against the Knights and Saints earlier this season, defeating Clarkson 3-0 and falling in overtime to the Saints, Crowell said the focus for her team will be consistency.
"We need to learn that we have to be consistently hard to play against, hard in our structure and believing in ourselves right away," Crowell said. "I think when you spot really good teams goals early, it's going to be tough to climb out of a hole. So, we need to play our way and understand that it takes 60-65 minutes to do that against really good teams, especially late in the season."
Puck drop on Friday, January 23 against the Clarkson Golden Knights is set for 6 p.m. Friday's game will also feature a Kids Club Carnival on the concourse. You can purchase tickets to the game
