HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey returned to Thompson Arena Friday, welcoming the #11 Clarkson Golden Knights to Hanover. The Big Green took a lead into the third period, but Clarkson forced overtime and secured the victory with only a few seconds to play, defeating the Big Green, 2-1.
With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 4-16-3 overall and 2-10-3 in conference play.
Clarkson controlled most of the first period, outshooting the Big Green 14-3, but Head Coach
Maura Crowell said her team evened out the play in the back half of the period.
Crowell described the second period as a track meet, but the Big Green came out on top, finding the back of the net with just under five minutes to play.
Olivia Paidosh corralled the puck deep in the zone and sent it up to the blue line to
Ella Inglis. Inglis passed across the zone to
Izee Powell who fired a shot from the point, deflecting off the Clarkson goaltender's stick and into the net, giving Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.
"It was awesome. It's been a while, and just good hard work, simple shots to net and we were rewarded," Crowell said about her team's play in the second period.
Clarkson evened out the momentum that had swung in Dartmouth's favor, tying the game at one just 29 seconds into the third period. With still over 19 minutes to play in regulation, Crowell said her team remained focused.
"The bench was saying… all the right things," Crowell said. "There are times when our team is extremely locked in and they know what they need to do, and tonight was one of those nights, so it was great to see from them."
Neither team was able to pull ahead through the remainder of regulation, forcing overtime as each team would come away with at least one conference point in the standings.
Through 60 minutes, the Golden Knights outshot the Big Green 39-9, but Michaela Hesová continued to dominate for the Big Green, allowing just one goal and making 38 saves.
Both teams traded chances in the overtime period, each putting three shots on goal, but Clarkson was able to find the back of the net with just four seconds to play, defeating Dartmouth 2-1.
"Taking a point off of Clarkson, four out of six on the season, we're pretty happy about that," Crowell said after the game. "Obviously losing with four seconds left isn't ideal, but if we can do more of this from here on out consistently, we'll be in good shape."
The Big Green will be right back to work on Saturday, January 24, welcoming the St. Lawrence Saints to Hanover. Last time these teams faced, Dartmouth forced overtime with a power play goal in the third period, but the Saints came away with the victory.
"I think we match up well with SLU and Clarkson for whatever reason, we love playing at home, we're good here. I think we feel good about our performance, but we wanted that win tonight, so hopefully we can play more like we did today, tomorrow, and find a W," Crowell said.
Puck drop against the Saints is set for 3 p.m. You can purchase tickets
