TROY, N.Y. – Dartmouth women's hockey wrapped the weekend and the 2025-26 regular season at Rensselaer, Saturday, looking to build positive momentum headed into the Opening Round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs.
Despite the Engineers opening the scoring, the Big Green exploded for three goals in the second period en route to a 5-3 win over RPI. With the win, Dartmouth finishes the regular season at 5-22-3 overall and 3-16-3 against ECAC Hockey opponents.
RPI scored the first goal of the game just 5:44 into the first period, capitalizing on its only power play opportunity of the game.
With just under five minutes to play in the period, Dartmouth was granted its first power play of the game. It put four shots on net before evening the score 1:38 into the advantage.
Bridget Pringle jumped on a loose rebound in the crease, making it a 1-1 game with 3:15 to play.
Before the first period ended, the Engineers were assessed a too many players on the ice penalty, sending the Big Green back on the power play.
The advantage carried into the second period, as the Big Green put three shots on net. With just nine seconds left of the advantage, Dartmouth found the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead early in the middle frame.
Miami Jones found
Shae Messner on the wall. Messner passed it cross ice to
Sophia Chard whose shot floated up and above the goaltender to give the Big Green the lead.
Just 24 seconds later, Dartmouth struck again.
Dayton O'Donoghue sprung
Brielle Kelly-Paquet and
Olivia Paidosh on a 2-on-1. Kelly-Paquet sent the puck over to Paidosh who one-tapped it into the net, making it a 3-1 game in favor of Dartmouth.
Before the middle frame ended, the Big Green extended their lead to three.
Ella Inglis carried the puck through the neutral zone, finding
Cally Dixon who scored her team leading fifth goal of the season.
"I saw Ella [Inglis] take the puck wide with a nice drive and then she dropped it off and with a couple people in front of me, and I just made a move," Dixon said about her goal. "We talked about getting shots to net so that's all I did and it happened to go in."
Head Coach
Maura Crowell said her team took care of business against the Engineers, especially in the second period.
"We knew the way we wanted to play. We had some good conversations between last night and today, and I think it showed," Crowell said. "I love the goals because they were collective. A lot of them started in the d-zone, good passing, good symmetry with each other, and finding the back of the net."
The Engineers pushed in the third period, scoring their second goal of the game 5:37 into the period. Dartmouth held on to its 4-2 lead for nearly ten minutes, before Rensselaer made it a 4-3 game with exactly five minutes to play.
RPI pulled its goalie, going on the 6-on-5 advantage with just over two minutes to play in regulation. Only a few seconds later, Inglis jumped on a loose puck and pushed it down the ice, finding the back of the net to secure the 5-3 victory for the Big Green.
"I think we had really good o-zone mentality," Inglis said, after finishing the game with three points. "A lot of good entries and really good rush plays like Cally's goal, but also Brielle and Paidosh's great 2-on-1. So, I think we really capitalized on our opportunities today."
Crowell was happy to see her team handle the Engineers' third period push, saying "we shut the door when we needed to."
She added that not surrendering a goal when the Engineers pulled the goalie and instead, scoring the empty net, was "awesome".
Jiahui Zhan stood tall throughout the game in net, making 35 total saves. The sophomore made 11 in the first period and 15 in the third to help Dartmouth to a win.
The Big Green will now look to take this momentum into the Opening Round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs. Dartmouth, who finished tenth overall with 16.5 conference points, will head to Providence to take on the Brown Bears on Saturday, February 21 at 3 p.m.
Dixon said the momentum from Saturday through the week is important.
"There's a lot of positive momentum. We worked really hard and it showed today and I think just having that confidence is really important," Dixon said.
Inglis noted that the win over the Engineers emphasized the Big Green's offensive capabilities.
"I think today really showed that we do have that offensive ability and we can bury pucks and that's what we really need," Inglis said.
Crowell echoed her team, saying Saturday showed what the Big Green are capable of.
"We've been working our butts off for a long time and we've been doing a lot of things well… We got some puck luck today. We earn it and that's how you get it, you work for it, you stick together and you don't quit," Crowell said.
Next Saturday's opening round matchup with the Bears is set for 3 p.m. You can watch the game on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
