PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Dartmouth women's hockey traveled to Providence, Rhode Island this weekend, taking on the Brown Bears in the Opening Round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs.
The Bears opened a two-goal lead in the first period and never surrendered the lead, securing a 7-2 victory over the Big Green.
With the loss, Dartmouth concludes the 2025-26 season with a 5-23-3 overall record.
Brown opened the scoring at the 8:23 mark of the first period, finding a loose puck in the crease to take a 1-0 lead. Less than 30 seconds later, the Bears doubled their lead as the puck fluttered through traffic and into the back of the net.
Despite being down by two goals, Head Coach
Maura Crowell knew there was a lot of hockey left to be played and that her team was prepared.
"We had a lot of belief in the room. We had good preparation going into [the second period], so we believed we could get back into it," Crowell said.
Just 3:40 into the middle frame, Brown extended its lead to three. Not even a minute later, Dartmouth got on the board.
Ella Inglis tallied her fourth point in two games, finding the back of the net at the 4:04 mark to make it a 3-1 game.
A few minutes later, Dartmouth pulled itself within one. Inglis picked up the puck in the neutral zone, beating multiple defenders before sending the puck to a charging
Kenzington Lehman, who one touched the puck into the net to make it a 3-2 game.
Just under 30 seconds after the Big Green pulled within one, Brown reextended its lead to two. Before the second period ended, Brown was assessed a too many players on the ice penalty, giving the Big Green their lone power play opportunity of the game. The power play lasted into the third period, but the Big Gren were unable to capitalize.
The Bears went on to score three goals in the third period and keep the Big Green off the scoreboard, defeating Dartmouth 7-2.
"[Brown] is fast. They get up the ice pretty quickly. They play a north style game, so they get behind us a little bit and we're catching them, we're trying to catch them on the back-check," Crowell said about the style of Saturday's game. "Their rush hockey is really good, Our rush defense is an area that we've been focusing on, but they exposed that a little bit and they're dangerous around the net."
The Big Green were 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, killing off one penalty in each period.
Jiahui Zhan got the start and made 21 total saves in just over two periods of play. Eleanor Rogrs played the final 7:53, making one save and allowing one goal.
Despite Brown controlling the momentum for a majority of the second half of the game, Crowell had praise for
Ella Inglis, who factored into both of Dartmouth's goals on Saturday. Inglis finished the season with five goals, eight assists, and 13 points, each the team high.
"
Ella Inglis played an amazing game today," Crowell said. "She got one of those goals and had a beautiful assist to Kenzie [Lehman] and, I felt lime she put the team on her back at times and was so determined for that game to go our way. That's definitely a bright spot moving forward with her bring so young."
With Crowell's second complete season at Dartmouth under her belt, she and the rest of the Big Green will shift their focus to the offseason and preparation for the 2026-27 season.
"I think we learned a lot. I always tell the group success isn't always linear… Sometimes you have to have some bumps along the way," Crowell said. "We are bringing in a big class, it's going to be a lot of change moving forward that I think is healthy."
Additionally, Crowell gave thanks to her senior class, nothing they have helped set the tone going forward.
"They've been such an integral part of my two years here, and obviously, their four. They've done a phenomenal job setting the tone for the group," Crowel said. "The come to work every single day, super consistent, super reliable, and they have a passion for the game. Hopefully our underclassmen have been sponges and learned a lot, because they've been a really special part of it."
