BOSTON — No. 19/20 Boston University jumped out to an 11-0 lead before the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team responded with four consecutive goals in the span of 3:30, but it wasn't enough in a 13-5 loss on Sunday. First-year Max Becker was sensational in goal, tallying 18 saves in his first collegiate action. Spencer Reagan won 15-of-21 faceoffs as well.
Â
"Credit to BU; they're a tricky team to prepare for," said head coach Sean Kirwan. "Really great in the 10-man ride, really ferocious. Their guys, attack through defense, were really good at getting into the gloves and definitely disrupted our flow throughout the field."
Â
Offensively, first-year Stu Gates tallied a team-high three points via a goal and two assists. Tyler Juhlin scored twice as well.
Jesse Phelan and Thomas Power each had two caused turnovers, while Reagan's seven groundballs were tops on the team.
Â
Neither team scored until nearly eight minutes into the first quarter, when BU's Jimmy Kohr got on the board. The Terriers went on to lead 4-0 after a quarter and 7-0 at the half.
Â
The margin extended to 11-0 early in the third, but the Big Green answered with four goals in less than four minutes. Goals came from Juhlin (on the extra man), Gates, Alex Jessey then Juhlin again, to pull within 11-4 with 3:10 on the clock.
Â
"We started to see the Dartmouth team that we know and love," said Kirwan. "We didn't prepare our guys well enough to get off the bus ready to go. That's certainly on me. Woke up a little bit in the third quarter.
Â
"Thankfully, we were great up the middle," Kirwan continued. "Spencer Reagan and Max Becker were fantastic to continue to get us chances with the ball, so we've got to just round out into form on the other sides of things."
Â
Dartmouth had an ensuing extra-man opportunity trying to get closer, but the Terriers killed the penalty.
Quinn Stankovits scored his first-career goal in the fourth quarter, but with six fourth-quarter turnovers, the Terriers maintained possession for much of the stanza.
Â
Final shots were 43-29 in favor of BU, with final groundballs even at 38. The Big Green were just 15-of-28 on clears, to Boston University's 28-of-34. Dartmouth had 27 turnovers, with the Terriers tallying 17.
Â
The Big Green return to action on Saturday when they travel to Vermont to face the Catamounts. Opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
