SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Dartmouth fell to Utah 17-10 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City on Saturday. Dartmouth's overall record moved to 3-2 following the loss.
The first quarter began with Dartmouth facing an early challenge as the Utes took an initial lead with a goal at the 12:59 mark and added two more goals. Dartmouth got on the board as Tyler Juhlin scored at the 6:03 mark to make it 3-1. Stu Gates made it a 3-2 game at the 4:49 mark. Despite this change in momentum, the Utes managed to maintain a lead, ending the quarter ahead 4-2.
After Utah opened the scoring at the 14:16 and 13:24 marks of the second quarter. Dartmouth responded effectively to Utah's early scoring in the second quarter with three straight goals. Thomas Vandenberg scored at 12:30, assisted by Gates, while Alex Jessey and Gordie Leary scored back-to-back goals at the 9:32 and 9:05 marks. Later in the quarter with Utah leading 7-5, Emmett Paradine scored Dartmouth's fourth goal of the quarter at 4:55, maintaining the team's competitive stance. Despite Dartmouth's efforts, the Utes managed to extend their lead by the end of the quarter. The period concluded with Utah leading 10-6.
Dartmouth looked for comeback in the third quarter, but Utah scored three times in the first four minutes of the frame to take a 13-7 lead. Dartmouth saw a crucial moment early in the third quarter when Juhlin scored at 11:22, assisted by Quinn Stankovits, to momentarily halt Utah's momentum. After Utah made it 15-7, Juhlin scored at the 4:31 mark to cut it a seven goal game, the teams went to the fourth quarter with Utah leading 15-8.
In the fourth quarter, both teams scored twice with Jessey and Gates scoring at the 7:26 an 4:00 marks.
Gates led the offensive effort with two goals and three assists. Juhlin added three goals, Jessey also found the back of the net twice, while adding an assist to his tally. Spencer Reagan won 10 faceoffs for the Big Green.
Max Becker made 14 saves in net for the Big Green while collecting six groundballs. He now has 61 saves through his five collegiate games.
In their next game, Dartmouth heads to Fairfield, Conn., to face Fairfield at Rafferty Stadium. The matchup is set for Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m.
