ITHACA, N.Y. – Dartmouth baseball concluded the regular season series with the Cornell Big Red, Saturday, splitting the doubleheader to finish the series 1-2 against Cornell.
The Big Green fell 4-2 in a close game one contest before exploding for a 15-0 win in the series finale.
Dartmouth moves to 6-15 overall and 3-6 in Ivy League play.
Game 1: Cornell 4, Dartmouth 2
In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Big Red opened the scoring in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead thanks to a walk and a single.
Each team saw a few baserunners over the next few innings, but both pitchers, including
Nate Isler for the Big Green, impressed to keep it a one-run game.
The Big Green took the lead in the sixth inning. Nico Bañez drew a lead off walk, later stealing second. A ground out sent Bañez to third before
Henry Murray hit his first collegiate home run, giving Dartmouth the 2-1 lead.
Cornell responded, tying the game in their half of the sixth inning, after capitalizing on two base hits and a Dartmouth error.
The Big Red retook the lead in the seventh inning. After drawing two walks to lead off the inning, Cornell forced Isler out of the game. They then recorded a single and scored on a walk pitch to make it a 4-2 game.
Dartmouth put one runner on in the ninth as Murray recorded his second hit of the day, but the Big Green weren't able to pull even, falling to Cornell, 4-2.
Isler gave up four runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work. He dealt three walks and fanned four.
Mac Burke pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
Game 2: Dartmouth 15, Cornell 0
The Big Green exploded for a win in the series finale, scoring runs in seven of the nine innings, including three multi-run innings to earn the 15-0 win.
Dartmouth opened its lead in the first inning. Nico Bañez drew a leadoff walk before advancing to second on wild pitch. Back-to-back ground outs scored Bañez to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
They then added three runs in the second inning, capitalizing on only one hit.
Taer Rodriguez reached after being hit with the first pitch he saw, going on to steal second.
Austin Moran drew a walk before both runners advanced on a passed ball.
Jack Espiritu-Niswonger drew a walk for Dartmouth's second free base of the inning, loading the bases with no outs and forcing a pitching change.
Alejandro Puig bounced into a fielder's choice to record the first out of the inning, but it doubled Dartmouth's lead. Bañez then doubled to score Moran and Niswonger before
Henry Murray fouled out, but scored Puig to make it a 4-0 game.
Dartmouth added one run in the third when
Milo Suarez hit his first home run of the season, the Big Green's second of the day.
The offense continued in the fourth as the Big Green extended their lead to six. Moran led the inning with a single, stealing second and heading to third and eventually home on two wild pitches.
Moran recorded an RBI in the fifth, scoring
Chris Miller for the Big Green's seventh run. Miller led the inning off with a walk before advancing to third on a Rodriguez double.
Dartmouth was held off the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh but plated four runs in the eighth. Murray singled and Suarez was hit by the pitch, putting runners on first and second with one out.
Tyler Sirchia singled to score Murray, making it 8-0, before Miller singled to load the bases.
A wild pitch scored Suarez before Rodriguez won his battle at the plate, drawing an 11-pitch walk to reload the bases. Espiritu-Niswonger singled to score two more runs as the Big Green put runs 10 and 11 on the board.
The Big Green added four more in the ninth. Bañez led off the inning with a single before Murray and Suarez both drew walks to load the bases.
Mason Smith entered the game as a pinch hitter, knocking a 2-RBI single.
Miller bounced into a fielder's choice to record the first out of the inning, giving way to
Sam Andersen, who singled to center, making it a 14-0 game. Dartmouth added one more run, as Espiritu-Niswonger added another RBI, sealing the 15-0 victory for the Big Green.
Nate Kugler was dominant in his start on the mound, allowing only one hit in seven innings of work. He walked two and added five strikeouts.
Kyle Klaris-Schell pitched the final two innings, allowing only one baserunner, courtesy of a walk.
Up Next: The Big Green will travel to Massachusetts for a midweek nonconference matchup against the Boston College Eagles on Wednesday, April 8. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
