McDonald joined the baseball staff late in the summer of 2016 to serve as the volunteer assistant coach. He arrives having spent time coaching as Grambling State, Grace University (Neb.) and Manhattan Christian College (Kan.), serving as the head coach for a season at that last stop.
Inheriting a Manhattan team that suffered through an 0-42 season in 2015, McDonald turned the team around and guided the Thunder to a 19-21 mark with more than half of those losses coming by one or two runs.
During the 2014 season, he was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Grace for Thad Bosley, a 14-year veteran of Major League Baseball and former hitting coach with the Oakland A’s and Texas Rangers. Under McDonald’s care, the pitching staff posted a 3.49 ERA while going 27-17 in the team’s inaugural season.
McDonald worked with the pitchers and catchers at Grambling State after graduating from Wheaton College with a degree in communication in 2013. While a member of the Wheaton baseball team, he helped the team rack up a school-record 24 victories as a freshman by contributing 25 innings and allowing opponents to hit just .261 against him. Over his four-year career, the Thunder posted 77 wins over his four seasons as he went 4-6 with a 5.34 ERA over 87.2 innings.
