ITHACA, N.Y. -- Dartmouth head coach Bill Wilson's return to Cornell's Schoellkopf Field was a heartbreaker as the Big Green lost to No. 11 Cornell, 12-11, in the final seconds of an Ivy League men's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green tied the game, 11-11, on Jamie Coffin's man-up goal with 1:51 to play in a matchup that featured two of last year's three Ivy League champions. Princeton also shared the title.
With less than 10 seconds to play, Dartmouth goalkeeper Andrew Goldstein made a save on a shot by Cornell's Dave Pittard. But the Big Red's Sean Greenhalgh got the ground ball and immediately scored from inside the circle with four seconds remaining.
Wilson, in his first year as Dartmouth's head coach, was a Cornell assistant last season.
The loss sent Dartmouth's record to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League, while Cornell stayed alive in the Ancient Eight at 3-1, 6-3 overall. Princeton had a 1-0 Ivy mark prior to an April 17 game at Harvard.
The Big Green built a 4-3 lead after the first period as Brad Heritage and Ben Grinnell scored in the last four minutes. The Big Red used four goals by four different players for a 7-4 lead before Dartmouth's Tom Daniels got the Big Green back within two, 7-5, at halftime.
Ryan Danehy potted two of his three goals in the third period and Alec Hufnagel scored once for an 8-8 tie with 6:50 on the clock. Cornell's Justin Redd sent the Big Red back up, 9-8, at the end of three quarters.
Heritage and Danehy started the scoring in the fourth quarter for a 10-9 Dartmouth lead before Redd and Kevin Nee helped Cornell regain the advantage, 11-10, with less than three minutes on the clock.
In the nets, Goldstein made nine saves, while Cornell's Brandon Ross and Matt McMonagle combined for 11 saves. For the Big Green, Daniels had two goals and two assists for a four-point afternoon.
Dartmouth hosts Yale in a mid-week Ivy League contest on Wednesday, April 21 at Scully-Fahey Field. Game time is 3 p.m.
