TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - At the NCAA Pre-Nationals on Saturday, the Dartmouth men's cross country team finished a strong fifth out of 33 teams in the blue race while the Big Green women finished 19th in a 34-team field in the white race. Indiana State hosted the event at the LaVern Gibson championship course.
The men's blue race was loaded with ranked teams, with No. 5 Stanford finishing first with 89 points. Dartmouth, ranked 22nd in the country, finished fifth with 237 points. Sophomore Ben True (Yarmouth, Maine) was the top finisher for the Big Green, placing 25th with a time of 24:15.5. Senior Dave Burnham (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) and sophomore Alec Wall (Portland, Ore.) finished close behind True with times of 24:19.5 and 24:22.8, good enough for 31st and 35th respectively. Rounding out Dartmouth's top five were junior Ian Marcus (Amherst, Mass.), 47th in 24:32.0; and senior Steve Mucchetti (Ridgefield, Conn.), 99th in 25:03.4.
In a similarly loaded field, No.2 Michigan ran past all competitors to win the women's white race with 86 points. Dartmouth finished 19th with 463 points. Senior Melanie Schorr (Suffield, Conn.) had a top ten finish for the Big Green, placing ninth with a time of 20:43.1. Junior Hilary Dionne (Cumberland, R.I.) placed 31st in 21:17.8. The rest of Dartmouth's top five were sophomore Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.), 44th in 21:31.5; freshman Anna Greskovich (Pensacola, Fla.), 186th in 23:18.6; and senior Meredith Curtis (Bellingham, Wash.), 193rd in 23:28.8.
