HANOVER, N.H. -- In overtime, Adam Dzedsy scored his only goal of the game, giving Sacred Heart a 9-8 victory over Dartmouth in Saturday's men's lacrosse action.
With 28 seconds on the clock, Dzedsy scored off an assist by Kieran Carney as the Pioneers (4-1) defeated the Big Green for the first time in eight meetings dating back to 1998. Despite three goals by senior Ben Grinnell (Waccabuc, N.Y.), Dartmouth lost its first game of the year for a 2-1 record.
The game was evenly played throughout. Sacred Heart's Matthew Robideau and Phil Gardner traded goals with Dartmouth's Brad Heritage (Cheshire, Conn.) and Alec Hufnagel (Scarsdale. N.Y.) for a 2-2 tie after one period.
In the second quarter, the Big Green held a 4-3 lead when Heritage scored his second of the game at the 11:43 mark. Dartmouth took a 6-5 advantage into the break as Hufnagel netted his second even-strength goal of the day and senior Adam White (Damariscotta, Maine) scored a man-down marker with 4:20 on the clock.
After the Pioneers took a 7-6 lead midway through the third, Grinnell tied the game about six minutes later and then put Dartmouth back on top, 8-7, with eight seconds gone in the fourth.
Tony Tanzi knotted the game at 8-8 with 12:36 left in regulation to force the extra session.
In the nets, Dartmouth senior Andrew Goldstein (Milton, Mass.) had 15 saves, including five in the third period. For the Pioneers, Thomas Hind picked up the win with a seven-save effort.
Grinnell had a five-point afternoon that included two assists, and Heritage also had an assist. Hufnagel scored two goals.
After three straight home games, Dartmouth heads to Florida, taking on Maryland in a neutral site game at Boca Raton on March 22.
