Tim Daniels' (Duxbury, Mass.) first collegiate goal with 2:22 remaining in regulation turn out to be the game-winner as the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team upset No. 4 Maryland, 7-6, on Tuesday at St. Andrew's School.
Senior
Andrew Goldstein (Milton, Mass.) turned aside 13 shots for the Big Green (3-1), including a game-tying Maryland attempt as time expired. Harry Alford had 12 saves for the Terrapins (4-2).
Sophomore
Nick Bonacci (Crofton, Md.) led Dartmouth with two goals and an assist, junior
Brad Heritage (Cheshire, Conn.) added a pair of tallies, and senior
Ben Grinnell (Waccabuc, N.Y.) assisted on two goals.
The Big Green trailed at halftime, 3-1, before tying the game in the third quarter. Junior
Jamie Coffin (Greenwich, Conn.) scored with 3:26 remaining to pull Dartmouth within 4-3, and Heritage tied the game with 56 seconds left.
Bill McGlone put Maryland up, 5-4, just 46 seconds into the fourth quarter before Heritage scored 1:11 later and Bonacci gave Dartmouth its first lead with 5:55 remaining. With 2:22 on the clock, Daniels beat Alford off an assist from Coffin to extend the lead to 7-5. Xander Ritz scored for the Terps at 1:22, but Goldstein and the Big Green defense stood strong and turned away any would-be tying goals.
The win was Dartmouth's first in eight attempts against its ACC foe in a series that dates back to 1940. The teams had last played in 1999.
With 92 career points, Coffin is closing in on becoming the 19th Dartmouth player with 100. Grinnell moved into 12th on the Big Green's career scoring list (117).
Dartmouth returns to action next Tuesday, March 29, when it travels to Albany for a 3 p.m. matchup.
