Dartmouth men's tennis team finished ninth out of 16 squads with a 2-1 record at the ECAC Championships this weekend.
The Big Green knocked off Rutgers and
St. John's, but fell to Ivy League foe Cornell.
Dartmouth's first match of the tournament was a 6-1 loss to Cornell. Victories by the teams of Daniel Freeman/David Waslen (#1) and Ari Gayer/Steven McGaughey (#3) secured the doubles point for the Big Green. The Big Red won all of the singles matches, with the closest contest coming at third singles, where Freeman lost to Dan Brous, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6. Other close matches included Waslen's loss to Josh Raff, 7-5, 7-5 at first singles and a battle at sixth singles with Gayer falling 7-6, 7-6 to John Fife.
The Big Green rebounded from that match with a resounding 7-0 win over Rutgers. Dartmouth won all three doubles matches, including a decisive 8-3 win at second doubles by Jeffrey Schechtman/Justin Tzou. Coach Kinyon's squad rolled through the singles matches, winning all in six in straight sets. Tzou rolled Rutgers' Lawrence Zakrevsky, 6-1, 6-1 at fourth singles, while Jeffrey Friedman topped Rohan Patkar, 6-3, 6-3 in fifth singles.
Dartmouth finished the weekend with its most exciting match of the tournament, defeating St. John's 5-2. The Big Green dropped the doubles point despite an 8-3 win by Gayer/McGaughey at the third slot. The squad was not down for long, rallying to win five of six singles matches to secure the victory.
Waslen played a hard-fought match at first singles, falling 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 to Louis Desmouteaux, ranked fourth in the Northeast. In second singles, Schectman rallied from a 4-6 loss in the first set to down Sash Svetlakou, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Big Green improved its record to 2-1 on the season. The Dartmouth men will head to the ITA Regionals at Penn, Oct. 19-22 and return home to host the Big Green Invitational on Nov. 4-6.
