Erie Pa, -- The No. 7 ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team lost its first battle of the season today, as they fell to Mercyhurst College, who is ranked No. 4, by a score of 5-3.
The Big Green came out flying in the first period, and earned a power play just six seconds in. The extra skater advantage payed off, when Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) found captain Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) who buried a shot past Mercyhurst goaltender Laura Hosier to give the Big Green an early 1-0 lead.
Apps struck again in the ninth minute, again on the power play, with assists coming from Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.) and Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.) that gave Dartmouth a 2-0 lead.
The Lakers worked their way back in the latter parts of the first period as they netted two goals in just 25 seconds. The first tally was claimed by Stefanie Bourbeau, who notched her fourth goal of the season when she beat Big Green net minder Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.). Moments later the Lakers tied things up at two apiece when Julia Colizza found the back of the net off a pass from Angelica Lorsell.
The momentum carried over for the Lakers as they lit the lamp twice in the early mintues of the second period. Meghan Agosta gave the Lakers their first lead of the game, then just three minutes later it was Bourbeau who, again, found the net and gave the Lakers a 4-2 lead.
Dartmouth defender Sarah Newnam (Lexington, Ky.) did her best to keep the Big Green in the game, when she lit the lamp on the power play mid-way through the second period. Freshman Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) recorded her first collegiate point as she picked up an assist on Newnams mark. Apps was also credited with an assist.
The Lakers increased their lead in the third period when Bourbeau recorded the hat-trick on a Mercyhurst power play and shut the game down with a 5-3 score.
Clemis finished the evening making 22 saves, while Hosier stopped 26 Big Green chances. With the win, the Lakers stay unbeaten with a 4-0-1 record on the season.
The Big Green will do battle with the Lakers again tomororw, Oct. 22 at 1:00 p.m., at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
