HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought match to Cornell who is in the hunt for an Ivy League title. The Big Red (16-8, 9-2) won the first two games with the Big Green (11-11, 5-7) taking Game Three but losing the fourth. Game scores were 26-30, 19-30, 31-29, 23-30.
In the first game, Dartmouth took a quick lead before Cornell rallied and pulled ahead. The Big Red maintained the lead and allowed Dartmouth to get to within two at 25-27 but Cornell held onto for the 30-26 win.
In the second game Cornell took a big lead, 11-4 but behind the serving of Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) the Big Green won several points in a row to cut the deficit to 17-12, but Cornell proved too strong as it won going away for a 30-19 victory.
Dartmouth began the third game taking its first lead of the match going up 5-2. The Big Red battled back but Dartmouth kept a firm hold of the lead for the next couple of points. Amy Gordon served Cornell back into the game, tying the contest at 21. The two then went point-for-point with neither side going up by more than two as Dartmouth won 31-29.
In Game Three Cornell and Dartmouth went back and forth until late in the game as Cornell won 30-23.
Sandy Barbut (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) both had double-doubles for Dartmouth as Barbut recorded 14 kills and 15 digs and MacGregor had 12 kills and 10 digs. Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) was tops with 45 assists and Nadine Parris, playing in her last home match for Dartmouth, had five total blocks.
The Big Green will end its season next weekend traveling to Yale and Brown. The Big Green will take on the Bulldogs on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7:00 pm and then Brown on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 4:00 pm.
