HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's hockey team scored a pair of power play goals this afternoon at Thompson Arena to earn the victory over Cornell, 2-1. Freshman Maggie Kennedy notched her fourth gamewinner of the year early in the third, and senior Kate Lane made nine saves in the final frame to earn the victory.
The Big Green improved to sixth in the ECAC Hockey League with the weekend sweep, but now knows it will be forced to go on the road for the opening round of the conference playoffs thanks to Brown's victory over Clarkson this afternoon.
Dartmouth opened the scoring late in the first period when senior Alex Zagaria (Rochester, Minn.) scored from right on top of the crease at 14:35. Assisting on the play were classmate Danielle Grundy (Kelowna, B.C.) and junior Caroline Ethier (Matagami, Que.).
That was all the scoring after two frames, though both teams had their chances. Freshman Marley McMillan (St. Paul, Minn.) beat the Cornell netminder on a breakaway, but her shot rang off the far post. Shortly after the Big Red found itself with an odd-man rush the other way but Lane (Wingham, Ont.) slammed the door.
Cornell (9-17-0, 5-15-0 ECACHL) eventually knotted things up at 4:37 of the third. Emma Chipman found the back of the net for a power play tally. But like last night against Colgate, the Big Green got the decisive goal. At 5:38 of the third, Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) knocked in her seventh of the season to give the home team the win, 2-1. Assisting on the play were McMillan and classmate Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.)
The Big Green went 2-for-5 on the power play, while Cornell went 1-for-3 with the extra skater. Beth Baronick stopped 46 shots for the Big Red, while Lane made 21 saves in the winning effort.
Dartmouth (11-10-4, 8-7-3 ECACHL) heads to the North Country for the final weekend of the regular season, facing Clarkson on Friday night and St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon.
