Douthett's Nine Points Leads Dartmouth Women's Lacrosse over Princeton
April 22, 2006
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Junior
Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) had a nine-point afternoon, leading the No. 14 Dartmouth women's lacrosse team to a convincing 15-5 victory over No. 10 Princeton on Saturday.
Douthett had four goals and five assists, along with six ground balls, as the Big Green raced out to a 9-0 lead in the first half. Defensively, Dartmouth kept Princeton off the board until there were only nine seconds to play in the opening half.
The victory kept the Big Green's slim hopes alive for a share of the Ivy League title. Dartmouth's Ancient Eight schedule is complete at 5-2, while Cornell and Princeton are now 5-1.
The Big Green will need help as the Big Red is at Harvard on Friday, April 28, while the Tigers travel to Brown on Saturday, April 29.
"We played with a ton of confidence today," said Dartmouth coach
Amy Patton, whose Big Green women had their most lopsided margin of victory ever against Princeton. "Our throwing and catching was excellent. We just went up and down the field, and that got us in the flow.
"Princeton is a very good team," said Patton, "so this is an outstanding win for us."
Statistically, Patton noted Dartmouth's 14-8 advantage in draw controls as a factor to the win. The Big Green also outshot Princeton, 23-15, including 15-5 in the opening half.
Douthett had the most points by a Dartmouth player since Lana Smith had nine (four goals, five assists) in a 19-7 victory over Columbia on March 30, 2003.
Douthett potted all four goals in the opening half, and also had help from junior
Jen Pittman (New Canaan, Conn.) who scored the first two of the game en route to four for the game. Pittman also had one assist.
Sophomore
Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) also chipped in with four goals, while senior
Casey Hazel (Reisterstown, Md.) scored twice. Junior
Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had one goal and one assist.
In the nets, Dartmouth senior
Devon Wills (Denver, Colo.) and Princeton's Colleen O'Boyle both made three saves.
Dartmouth improved to 9-4 overall, while Princeton slipped to 8-5.
With an eye toward an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, the Big Green has an important mid-week game up next. On Wednesday, April 26, Dartmouth hosts No. 9 Boston University at 6 p.m.
