HANOVER, N.H. -- The women's lacrosse showdown between No. 12 Dartmouth and No. 8 Boston University never materialized as the Big Green posted an 11-5 win Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) had four goals and junior Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) contributed two goals and three assists as Dartmouth built a 4-2 halftime lead and then improved it to 8-2 midway through the second.
The victory pushed Dartmouth, now 10-4 overall, closer to an NCAA tournament berth. The Terriers are 12-4 on the year.
"We need every game right now," said head coach Amy Patton whose Big Green has a road trip to Boston College and a home date with No. 1 Duke left on the calendar. "We have good momentum. We're calling it our new season. We're playing with a lot more confidence."
Post-game, Patton had an extra hug for goalkeeper Devon Wills (Denver, Colo.). The senior battled stomach flu and a fever since the night before and was doubtful up until game time. She finished with nine saves.
"Hats off to Devon Wills," said Patton. "We weren't even sure she was going to play, and then she responded with one of her best games of the year."
Dartmouth senior Annie Leibovitz (Boulder, Colo.) and BU's Sarah Dalton traded the first two goals of the game. The Big Green then ripped off three straight by senior Casey Hazel (Reisterstown, Md.), junior Jen Pittman (New Canaan, Conn.) and Douthett for a 4-1 lead with 7:12 to go.
Defensively, Dartmouth kept the Terriers from gaining any offensive flow throughout most of the first half, before Lindsay Lewis made it 4-2 with 6:33 to go.
Pittman, Douthett and junior Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) started the second half with goals, and Barry waited until the 16:47 mark to score her first of the game. Her free position goal made it 8-2 Dartmouth.
Barry did the rest of the work with three more, making it 11-4 with a minute left on the clock.
Dartmouth defender Lizzy Cuneo (Summit, N.J.) had the tough task of guarding the Terriers' Jenny Hauser, who came into the game third in the nation in goals scored (3.80) and fifth in points (5.27). Cuneo got the job done, allowing Hauser only one goal. That came at the midway point of the second half.
"I thought Lizzy did an awesome job on Hauser," said Patton, "and our defense was ready to slide on her quickly. The whole defense did a really nice job."
The Big Green has the weekend off before traveling to Boston College on Wednesday, May 3. On Sunday, May 7, Dartmouth hosts No. 1 Duke in advance of the NCAA selection show on Monday, May 8.
