NEWTON, Mass. - Sophomore Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) had five goals and two assists to lead the No. 8 Dartmouth women's lacrosse team to a 16-2 victory over Boston College on Wednesday evening. The Big Green improves to 11-4 overall, helping to solidify its case for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, while the Eagles fall to 8-9 on the season.
"I was really pleased that we were able to come out and set the tone from the start," said head coach Amy Patton. "To have a shutout in the first half is phenomenal. Every aspect of our game was firing on all cylinders in the first half."
Dartmouth poured in eight goals in the first 10 minutes and led 12-0 at the half. Barry opened the scoring barrage just 47 seconds into the game with an unassisted tally. Junior Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tacked one on 13 seconds later and junior Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) followed at the 27:03 mark.
Junior Jen Pittman (New Canaan, Conn.) took a pass from senior Annie Leibovitz (Boulder, Colo.) and deposited it in the back of the net to make it 4-0. Senior Kristen Zimmer (Alexandria, Va.) scored off a feed from Barry to extend the lead and then Barry set up Szefi for her second goal of the game.
Barry tallied her second goal of the game to make it 7-0 and then senior Casey Hazel (Reisterstown, Md.) converted a free position shot at the 20:04 mark. Goals by Barry, Pittman, Hazel and Douthett closed out the scoring in a completely dominant first half.
Boston College finally broke through in the second half when Jenna McCabe scored with the assist going to Maura Mahoney. The Big Green answered with four straight goals, including two by Barry and one each from Zimmer and freshman Jenna Manula (Pottstown, Pa.). Boston College's Lizette Blohm tallied with 16 seconds left to provide the final margin.
In goal, senior Devon Wills (Denver, Colo.) played 57:04 and allowed just one goal while making five saves. She was relieved by sophomore Ashley Heist (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) who played 2:56 and allowed one goal but did not record a save. For the Eagles, Katie Monaghan started in goal and played 7:11 and took the loss. She allowed seven goals and did not record a save. She was replaced by Courtney Zwirko who played 22:49 and allowed five goals while making three saves. Tara McKennett played the final 30:00 for BC and allowed four goals and made six saves.
The Big Green will return to action on Sunday, May 7, when it hosts Duke. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
