HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth baseball team split with Yale this afternoon, coming back to win Game One, 8-5, before falling in the nightcap, 13-9. With the split the Big Green remains one game behind Harvard in the Red Rolfe Division entering the final weekend of Ivy League play.
Freshman Raymond Allen (Longwood, Fla.) continued his recent hot streak. After going 4-for-4 yesterday against Vermont, he went 4-for-6 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored as the designated hitter in today's contests. Junior Will Bashelor (Bozrah, Conn.) also had a strong day, going 6-for-10 with five RBI and three runs scored.
In the opener, the Elis broke out to a quick lead, 5-1, after the top of the fourth, but much like the day before the Big Green was able to come from behind late. Dartmouth made it a two-run game with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Tommy Myette (Parrish, Fla.) walked and scored on a single by freshman Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.). Junior Andrew Nacario (Carlsbad, Calif.) ran home on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning.
Dartmouth took the lead in the fifth as the first four batters all reached base. Freshman Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) led off with a bunt single and Allen was hit by a pitch to put two men on. Santopadre scored on a double by Bashelor. Allen then scored on a single by sophomore Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) to tie the game, 5-5. Bashelor put the Big Green up, 6-5, when he scored on a double play ball.
The squad added two insurance runs in the sixth to account for the final scoring. The top four batters for Dartmouth went a combined 8-for-13 with four RBI and five runs scored in the contest.
Junior Jeff Wilkerson (Walnut Creek, Calif.) improved to 2-2 with the victory, going six innings and scattering eight hits while striking out two. Matt Fealey (4-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs after facing two batters in the fifth without recording an out. Sophomore Russell Young (Cleburne, Texas) picked up his first save of the season by getting the final three outs of the game.
In Game Two, Yale (25-16, 10-6 Ivy) again broke out to the quick lead. After getting one in the first off of four singles, the Elis got a two-run homer in the third by first baseman Marc Sawyer to go up, 3-0.
Dartmouth cut into the lead, 3-1, in the bottom half of the inning when Nacario was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Santopadre. But Yale answered with eight runs on eight hits in the fourth to make it a ten-run lead, 11-1, with the big hit being a three-run triple to left center field by Sawyer.
After the Bulldogs went up 11, 13-2, in the sixth, the Big Green began to chip away with three in the bottom half of the inning and two more in both the eighth and ninth innings, but it wasn't enough to overcome the lead they spotted the Elis. Sophomore Chase Carpenter (Bartlett, Tenn.) fell to 3-3, while Mike Elias (3-1) picked up the win for Yale.
Dartmouth (17-16, 11-5 Ivy) winds up the conference portion of its schedule with home-and-home doubleheaders against Harvard beginning Saturday in Cambridge. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
