HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth baseball team took the opener of the doubleheader with Harvard, 4-0, to make the nightcap the decisive game for the Red Rolfe Division title. After Harvard broke out to a quick 7-2 lead in the nightcap, the Big Green rallied to tie it, 9-9, with a four-run seventh. But the Crimson scored 14 runs in the eighth and ninth innings to pull away and win the game, 23-9, and the Red Rolfe Division by one game over the Big Green.
A key for the Big Green was its defense. In Game One, Dartmouth had no errors and gave up nothing but singles. In the nightcap, the Big Green made eight errors, including four in the decisive final innings.
In the opener, Dartmouth used four runs to back junior Jeff Wilkerson's (Walnut Creek, Calif.) shutout effort. Wilkerson (3-2) scattered eight hits over seven innings while striking out six and walking none. Javier Castellanos (4-4) took the loss for Harvard.
The Big Green got on the board in the third on a run-scoring triple by junior Will Bashelor (Bozrah, Conn.). Bashelor then scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) to double the lead, 2-0. Bashelor finished the day 4-7 with two doubles and a triple.
Dartmouth added insurance runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach. In the fifth, Bashelor doubled to deep left field, allowing freshman Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) to score from first when the left fielder mishandled the ball for an error to up the score, 3-0.
In the sixth, the Big Green played some small ball to get the final run home. Freshman Raymond Allen (Longwood, Fla.) doubled and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.). Allen then scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by sophomore Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.).
In Game Two, Harvard broke out early, scoring four in the first inning thanks to two Big Green errors. The key play was a two-run double by Matt Brunnig just inside the bag down the right field line to make the game, 4-0.
The Big Green cut the lead in half, 4-2, on RBI singles by junior Andrew Nacario (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Bell. Harvard got three more in the third thanks to two errors, but Dartmouth again answered with two more in the third and one more in the fourth. In the third, senior Tommy Myette hit his third home run of the year to deep right center, driving in Wright. The next inning, Allen hit a shot over the right field fence to make the game, 7-5, on his first collegiate homer.
Single runs in the fifth and sixth put the Crimson (20-18-1, 14-6) back up four, 9-5, but the Big Green rallied following the stretch. Santopadre walked, Blydell singled and Bashelor doubled to drive in Santopadre. Wright followed that with a two-run single to left field. Two outs later, Allen hit gametying double to knot the game, 9-9.
But the Crimson used 12 hits and four errors to score 14 runs in the final two innings to dash Dartmouth's comeback effort. Sophomore Kyle Zeis (Solana Beach, Calif.) fell to 1-5 while Brad Unger (2-1) pitched one inning of relief to earn the victory.
Dartmouth (19-18, 13-7) winds up its season with two non-conference games this week. The Big Green heads to Hartford on Tuesday before hosting Boston College on Wednesday.
