HARTFORD, Conn. - Dartmouth's baseball team downed Hartford on a cold and rainy afternoon, 7-6. Senior Chris Lapointe picked up his third win of the year in relief, tossing 3.1 innings of shutout ball.
The Big Green got five runs in the first off of four hits, two hit batters, and two errors. The key hits of the inning were freshman Raymond Allen's (Longwood, Fla.) two-run single through the right side and another two-RBI single by classmate Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) to put Dartmouth in the lead, 5-0.
The Hawks responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning without the benefit of a hit. A walk and a hit batter put two on with none out. Ben Sobocinski then grounded into what appeared to be a tailor-made double play, but a throwing error by the shortstop allowed one run to score and Bill Perry to reach third. Perry then scored on a passed ball, but freshman Andrew Mallory (Langley, B.C.) struck out the next three hitters to avoid further damage.
The teams traded runs in the fourth to make the game, 6-3. With two outs in the top of the inning, junior Will Bashelor (Bozrah, Conn.) singled then stole second base without a throw. He then scored on a single by sophomore Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas). Hartford got another unearned run with two outs on an error by Allen at third base following a walk and a double that put two men on.
Hartford (8-32) tied things up in the fifth with three runs. A single and two hit batters loaded the bases with one out. Two runners then scored on a fielding error by the Big Green, and the tying run scored on an RBI groundout by David Grossman to knot the game, 6-6.
Dartmouth went ahead for good in the eighth. Senior Tommy Myette (Parrish, Fla.) singled and stole second, then advanced to third on a flyout by sophomore Jason McManis (Flower Mound, Texas). Myette then scored on a successful double steal as Pagliarulo broke for second for what proved to be the winning run.
Lapointe (Somersworth, N.H.) struck out four while allowing just one hit to improve to 3-2 on the year. Pete Moraski (1-6) took the loss for the Hawks. Sophomore Russell Young (Cleburne, Texas) picked up his second save of the season by getting the final four outs of the game.
Dartmouth (20-18) winds up its season by hosting Boston College tomorrow at Red Rolfe Field. Gametime is set for 3:30 p.m.
