HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth's baseball team handed out its 2006 team awards last night, capping off the evening with the announcement of next year's team captains. Junior Stephen Perry (Milford, N.H.) and sophomore Russell Young (Cleburne, Texas) will lead the rotation and team next year, while senior Josh Faiola (Pueblo, Colo.) earned most valuable player honors for this past season.
Perry will be looking to return to the rotation after spending the 2006 season recovering from an injury. In 2005 he led Dartmouth with four wins while striking out 44 in 51 innings. He was also the Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2004, going 6-1 with a 3.83 earned run average in his freshman season.
Young finished a strong sophomore campaign with a 3.44 ERA and a 3-3 record while also picking up a pair of saves late in the season. He also threw a gem against Columbia, shutting out the Lions in 80 minutes to earn the victory, 1-0. Young also picked up the team's most improved player award.
Faiola was the ace of the staff this spring, earning a 6-2 record with a 2.45 earned run average, the best in the Ivy League. He was named first team All-Ivy for the second team in his career, also earning the distinction in 2004. Faiola also picked up the team's pitcher of the year honors and the James H. Cooke Award, which is given to the player who has done the most for baseball at Dartmouth during his career.
The offensive player of the year award went to junior Will Bashelor (Bozrah, Conn.). Bashelor led the Big Green in eight offensive categories, including average, slugging percentage, doubles, triples, and stolen bases. Bashelor joined Faiola as a first team All-Ivy pick, and stands just nine stolen bases shy of the school's all-time mark.
Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) was named the team's rookie of the year. The team's primary leadoff hitter, he batted .295 with a .398 on-base percentage while scoring 34 runs. He also swiped three bases and was solid defensively at second base.
Teammate of the year honors went to senior John Huelskamp (Fresno, Calif.), who was asked to take on many different roles this season before it was cut short by an injury. A team leader throughout his career, Huelskamp's biggest hit came in 2005 when he hit a walk-off home run against Vermont to lead the Big Green to victory.
