HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth's baseball team had three players taken in the 2006 Major League Baseball draft being conducted this week. Senior Josh Faiola was taken in round 24 by the Baltimore Orioles, while Junior Will Bashelor became a 28th round pick of the New York Mets. Incoming freshman Trevor Cahill was taken in the second round by the Oakland Athletics as the 66th pick overall.
Faiola (Pueblo, Colo.) was the ace of the Big Green staff this spring, earning a 6-2 record with a 2.45 earned run average, the best in the Ivy League. He was named first team All-Ivy for the second team in his career, also earning the distinction in 2004. He was also drafted by the Orioles last year in the 32nd round but elected to return to the College to finish his degree.
Faiola also picked up the team's most valuable player award, pitcher of the year honors and the James H. Cooke Award, which is given to the player who has done the most for baseball at Dartmouth during his career.
Bashelor (Bozrah, Conn.) led the Big Green in eight offensive categories, including average, slugging percentage, doubles, triples, and stolen bases. Bashelor joined Faiola as a first team All-Ivy pick, and stands just nine stolen bases shy of the school's all-time mark. He was named Dartmouth's offensive player of the year at the team's awards banquet.
Cahill (Vista, Calif.) was rated in Baseball America as the 83rd-best player in the draft and the 15th-best coming out of California. The 6-4 high school senior earned a record of 5-3 with Vista High School while striking out 107 batters, the most in the San Diego Section. He threw back-to-back shutouts in the middle of the season, with 30 strikeouts over the two games.
