HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth baseball team has recently hired
George Roig as its new top assistant coach for the 2007 season.
Roig, a graduate of Florida Atlantic University in 2000, joins back up with head coach
Bob Whalen for the 2007 season. Roig served as the assistant to Whalen in 2002 for a short time before moving back to his alma mater to assist head coach Kevin Cooney for four seasons.
On the administrative end, Roig will be in charge of coordinating recruiting, player visitations, team travel and an assortment of other duties. On the field, Roig will be the primary hitting coach for the Big Green.
“I think it's a good move for him. He's been here before and understands the expectations of the program and the overall cycle of the Ivy League,” said Whalen.
While still in school Roig took on the duties of a student assistant coach as well as the administrative assistant for baseball dealing with everything from the maintenance of the facility to directing summer baseball camps. Roig also worked with the infield and was the primary base running coach for the Owls.
A captain his senior year at Florida Atlantic, Roig helped the Owls to a 54-9 record in 1999. The Owls also racked up 34 consecutive wins, which tied a national record.
