New Britain, Conn. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team won its matches today to take the tournament title at Central Connecticut State. With the two wins the Big Green is now .500 on the season at 3-3. Dartmouth defeated Quinnipiac in three games early in the day before taking on host CCSU and also defeating them in three.
In the first match Quinnipiac stayed with the Big Green through the opening game with Dartmouth winning a close one, 30-25. But in the next two games Dartmouth took control and won both games easily, 30-12 and 30-11. Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) led all players with 12 kills while Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) led all setters with 33 assists.
In Game Two Dartmouth held off a pesky Central Connecticut squad for the win and the tourney title. The Blue Devils proved to be no match for a Big Green team that was firing on all cylinders as Dartmouth won 30-25, 30-25, 30-22.
Frances Samolowicz (St. Charles, Ill.) led with 13 kills and five blocks while Thomas added 10. Megan MacGregor was tops along with Thomas with 12 digs. In the three-day tournament Samolowicz recorded 26 kills, 14 total blocks and a .440 hitting percentage. The sophomore had just four errors in the three matches while averaging 2.36 kills per game. For her play, Samolowicz was named the tournament MVP joining teammates Thomas and Hirsch.
"We did a lot of good things this weekend," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "Once we started rolling today we couldn't be stopped. It was a good test of our discipline. I'm happy for this team, we went into the weekend wanting to finish .500 and they weren't going to back down. Frances was great for us, she did everything we asked her to do and she deserved tournament honors."
