WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.-- Dartmouth head coach Chris Wielgus was probably experiencing a case of déjà vu in the waning moments of the Big Green's NCAA first round game against Purdue. The close 70-66 loss to the defending national champions seemed much too similar to Dartmouth's near miss against Virginia in 1995's first round.
After trailing by 20 points in the first half, the Dartmouth women's basketball team stormed back, taking a lead late in the game before falling, 70-66, to Purdue.
Senior Courtney Banghart closed out her Dartmouth career in style with 20 points, and three other Big Green players were in double figures. Junior Jackie Lippe contributed 13 points and nine rebounds, while senior Liz Martin and junior Samantha Berdinka added 10 points each. Banghart also finished with an NCAA record 58 consecutive games with a made 3-pointer.
The Big Green chipped away in the second half and ratcheted up the defense, holding Purdue to 31 percent from the floor.
The Boilermakers had an eight-point advantage, 64-56, on a Camille Cooper basket with 7:09 to go, but Dartmouth responded with a 9-0 run for a 65-64 lead with 4:42 to play.
Junior Stephanie Kinnear played a key role in that stretch, scoring six points, including the basket that gave the Big Green the lead.
After a pair of free throws by Purdue's Katie Douglas to make it 66-65, Kinnear made another free throw to tie it with 2:18 left.
But the Boilermakers punched their ticket to the second round with a jumper by MacKenzie Curless and two more free throws by Douglas.
PISCATAWAY, N.J.-- Courtney Banghart scored a game-high 19 points, but Dartmouth fell to Rutgers, 84-70, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
After going down 12-0 to start the game, senior Gyvonne Pinkston knocked down a 3-pointer for the first Dartmouth basket.
The lead expanded to 23-7, then 33-10, before swelling to 42-14 before Dartmouth settled down with consecutive triples by sophomore Samantha Berdinka and Banghart. Before the half, Dartmouth engineered a 15-7 run to cut the deficit to 49-29 after 20 minutes.
The second half was much of the same, as Rutgers pushed the lead to 28 points on five separate occasions. The Green used a 21-7 run to close out the game and earn a respectable final score.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-- Dartmouth almost made a name for itself. In front of a stunned crowd of nearly 4,000 on March 16, 1995, the Big Green nearly pulled off what would have been the biggest upset in NCAA Tournament history to that point.
The Big Green hung tough for the first eight minutes, trading baskets and keeping it at 15-13 after Ilsa Webeck drained a conventional 3-point play. UVA went on a 10-0 run at that point, taking a 25-13 lead, and stretched it to 44-31 at the half.
After trading buckets to start the second half, Dartmouth began an improbable comeback as everyone got into the act. A Laurie Stucker jumper from the foul line knotted the score at 51-51, and after ACC Player of the Year Wendy Palmer spun in a layup, Brandi Jones drained a long-range trey from the top of the key. It was now Dartmouth 54, Virginia 53, with 9:14 to play.
The euphoria would be short-lived as the Cavaliers got five straight points from Palmer, but the Big Green refused to go away as Sally Annis connected on a 3-pointer to make the score 62-61 with 6:28 to play.
HANOVER, N.H.-- Having secured a fourth straight Ivy League title, Dartmouth (18-8) was picked to host one of four preliminary round NCAA games against Monmouth, the Cosmopolitan Conference champion.
Coming off a 10-day layoff, and one day out of final examinations, Dartmouth hung tough with the Hawks but ultimately succumbed, 77-58.
The contest was tight through the first half, although Monmouth had several chances to pull away. It was the Big Green, though, that had the chance to set the tone for the second half. Down, 35-31, near the end of the first stanza, Dartmouth forced a Hawk turnover and had a chance to cut the lead to two before the break.
Freshman Jayne Daigle was outstanding for Dartmouth, scoring 28 points and snaring nine rebounds.
