NEW YORK, N.Y. - Dartmouth senior Harry Norton (No. Reading, Mass.) provided a bright spot for the Big Green, finishing fifth and earning first team All-Ivy recognition at the annual Ivy/Heps cross country championship at Van Cortlandt Park Friday.
Norton posted a time of 24:46.8, but as a team, the Dartmouth men were seventh among the eight Ivy schools competing. Both the Princeton men's and women's squads successfully defended their 2006 titles.
While the Tigers earned 38 points in the men's competition, Cornell was second with 67. The Big Green's pack separated from Norton and junior Glenn Randall (Collbran, Colo.) and Dartmouth had 148 points.
Randall ran a strong race, taking 15th in 25:15.3.
"Harry Norton's a senior, and he was determined to do well," said coach Barry Harwick, "and that's exactly what he did. I think he did everything we expect a senior and a captain to do. And Glenn Randall ran an exceptional race for us, too.
"The first two runners were where they were supposed to be. We were hoping that would pull the rest of our pack along, but that did not happen nearly as well as we had hoped," said Harwick.
Dartmouth's top five included sophomore Alex Hall (Manchester, N.H.), 40th; senior Grant Allen (Sugar Grove, Pa.), 42nd; and sophomore Kevin Treadway (Niskayuna, N.Y.), 46th.
The Dartmouth women's lineup was thinned by injuries, and the Big Green fared no better than eighth. As expected, the powerful Tigers placed five runners in the top five, including Liz Costello at No. 1, and won easily with 25 points. Dartmouth had 229.
Senior Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) was the top finisher at 25th, turning in a time of 18:28.5.
After that, Dartmouth grouped four runners between 48th and 53rd, starting with junior Aryn Gruneisen (Erie, Pa.). "From the start, we weren't in a good position," said coach Maribel Sanchez. "It just wasn't our day. It's been a challenging, trying year, and I expect we'll learn from this and get better."
In two weeks, both Dartmouth teams have another big meet, competing at the NCAA regional on November 10 at Boston's Franklin Park.
